So this is a bit of a weird (and gross) story. I was chewing my pen a few days back (bad habit of mine) and my arm slipped off the desk, resulting in me stabbing myself in the gums with the back of the pen. It then formed an ulcer in that exact spot and it still hasn't gone away.

What can I do to treat this? Someone told me to take the a tip of a teaspoonful of salt and pour it directly on the ulcer. I've done this three times now but it doesn't seem to be working. Other than it feeling like the devil is making a nest on my gums when I do it, it just stays there and continues hurting. I've been brushing my teeth more often in an attempt to ensure there's as little as possible bacteria there, so now I brush 5 times a day. It burns when I brush teeth as well and it hurts when I speak or eat, due to fact that it's situated in the front of me mouth.

Help, please! This is pretty horrible!

You brush your teeth too often.

Get some listerine antibacterial mouthwash if you're worried about infection - otherwise just let it heal...

you're going to suffer no mater what, you can only wait it out.

they sell medicine at the pharmacy, it's brown iodine something, when you put it on it hurts like hell but anything after that is nothing compared to the pain felt before :p

also glycerin helps, it puts a coating over it and stops it from aching so much

I agree .... ease up on the brushing for a while. Instead of the expensive mouth wash ... just disolve som normal table salt into some luke warm water ... rince twice (or three times a day if you can).

It happens sometimes to me if I eat something hard like a Doritos and it scratches my erm "verhemelte" (dont know the english word now) it gets very angry and inflamed ... and then this helps for me.

Mouthwash and topical gels from the pharmacy to reduce the inflammation. That's about it...

You can always numb the area using a numbing cream from the pharmacy?Dont agitate the area by excessive brushing.

If your in pain you caan buy stuff called dequadin from the pharmacy. Its intended specifically for this purpose - not exactly cheap though.

Gentian violet (1% solution - check with your pharmacist - it can be used in your mouth) is also EXCELLENT for ulcers/sore places in the mouth - and agree with Ockie - salt water rinses!

Okay, so it sounds like my only real recourse is to wait it out then. :(

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone. I'll run by the pharmacy a bit later to get a topical cream to just take the edge off it.

Even ask the pharmacy for some baby teething gel - that's a local anaesthetic too.

There used to be a product called Pyralvex (sp?), burned like a mofo but was effective in reducing inflammation. Don't know if it still exists. Check with a pharmacist that a topical cream will be okay in your mouth.

Another quick fix which always works is to jut put a clove in your mouth by te affected area, it numbs it nicely.
