Ultrabook pricing comparison (July 2012)

This only shows the old Asus Zenbooks, not the new Zenbook Primes with their 1080p displays.

I've made several inquiries re the Dell and the prices quoted were all way over the top ... and then we always hear how overpriced Apple is ... but the Air costs less. Who's doing this wrong? If the idea behind the Ultrabook is to compete with the MacBook Air then someone is getting it wrong here.

The Ultrabook OEM's are making the same mistake the Android OEM's made with their tablet offerings and it took Google with the Nexus 7 to shock them back to their senses.

I guess the MS Surface Pro will be competing against this selection of harware then?

Hmmmm... interesting, HP Folio R11 999.00.I just went online to tigerdirect added ultrabook to cart and total came up to $908.46 incl.shipping to shipito , quickly put the shipping weight and dimensions on their online quote calculator, got the shipping quotes and chose the cheapest + insurance then went to dutycalculator and...voila! R9 262.31 vs R11 999.00 = R2 736.69 price diff.

A similar exercise with the base Dell yields savings of about R3 500.00.Yerrr we have it tough here in S.A.

well if u look at US$ price of Dell = $200 lower than the Mac Air... but in ZAR its more expensive... so more profit there?
Dell same US$ price as the Samsung, but R4K more in rands

Not sure that this pricing is that accurate.

I can get the Asus UX21 in the last table for USD 899, and the 1.8GHz i7 version is 1059.95, as compared to the USD 1099 shown in the table for the i5 model.

In any event, the UX21A will be out soon, and it is much better than the previous model UX21E.

I may pick up a 13" i7 UX31A when it hits the streets.

I'm not sure about the others, but the Macbook Air.. once you order, that's pretty much what you stuck with. You can't upgrade the RAM as it's soldered into the motherboard.. the SSD is upgradable but will cost you and there no compatible after market SSD's at the moment.

The idea with an UltraBook is def not to upgrade anything. You get what you buy and live with it (battery included).

Which ultrabook doesn't have RAM soldered to the board? The Dells are like that too AFAIK.

It's actually in my spreadsheet, but something had to go to fit the table into the 600 pixel width we have.

I couldn't find a Ux31A (128GB SSD) for cheaper than R15,415 at South African (online) retail, even though I could get it for cheaper than a 13-inch 128GB MacBook Air in the US ($1,149).

This was compiled last week, so maybe some shops cut their prices over the weekend. Let me know if anyone spots it for cheaper.

A mate of mine today received his the UX31A i7 w/256gig SSD that he paid R15k ex VAT for - have asked him where he got it from.

edit: it was here - brick and mortar place - http://www.coagroup.co.za/

i'd like to get one of the Dell models to one of our users, as a lite but still capable laptop (Mac is out, we only get Windows, Dell), with good (expected) battery life, user does lots of travel, ....but same as with the non-windows7 tablets, a non-user replaceable battery is a concern.
Some guys either have a curse of getting a bum battery that don't last 3 yrs, or they just always manage to effup the battery through bad usage.... so, with the battery fixed, and non-user replaceable, can one assume that it will be treated as an onboard component, covered by the same full 3Yr warranty as for e.g. the screen or mobo? Thus replaced under warranty when it starts to fail? There are so many things that affect battery life, and battery lifespan, that its easy to become an issue of who's to blame for a battery that doesnt work/last as expected?
a 'normal' battery can cost close on R1000 to replace, so can assume that a 'built-in", "supplier only" fitted battery has to cost even more....

CeeBee, I attended a recent launch of the HP Folio 13 and HP told us that the battery has a guaranteed life and will be replaced when taking the unit to a HP repair centre.

I am in the market for an Ultrabook. Incredible Connection, Menlyn have a number of Ultrabooks on display. The form factor and the screen resolution of the Asus Zenbook Prime (1600×900 13.3-inch LED) really blew me away. It is a higher resolution than the Macbook Air and looks better than the Air, which is getting a bit dated. After all the reviews I read, this is the ultrabook to have. I am sure to find it somewhere else at a cheaper price. I am also in two minds whether to wait for Windows 8 release before I buy it.
