was wondering if my umc box on my street pole is normal cause its at 45 degree angle yet ones in my street are horizontal.

Also ive found more interference during storms so was wondering if water ccould get into it.

And finally if its not the box what else could it be?

Been trying to fix this interference for years and telkom isn't helping me much.
All they say is they can see theres interference on the line but dont do a thing.

It's just a little distribution box the wires terminate on in order to get to your house. They usually contain a few termination blocks and thats it.

So in the street corner box , you will have the following: (Please correct)
* UMC1000 - FTTC (c=curb) - basically extend the range of the exchange to 3km+
* DSLAM or IMAX - Broadband access gets inject/insert thru a bandpass filter into wires going to subscribers (telephone & ADSL router with filter)
* Possibly a small Siemens EWSD DLU switching unit ?? (mini exchange), just guessing here as the DLU is normally in a container with a/c
* Distribution Frame (termination point for the subscribers)

And then the pole based termination points which are at the various subscriber points.

The outdoor cabling was all part of SA Posts & Telecoms (now Telkom) Subs or Outdoor Plant Division

Worked in the Siemens S8M electro-mechanical (relays) exchange in Summerstrand, PE :sick:
First electronic exchange was installed at Sunninghill Park in 1981

Not too up to date with the new electronic exchanges ?

'distribution box' so if this isnt functioning propally can it affect my dsl and give it interference? also lightning disconnections?

@kilos

I cannot remember all the stuff packed into those boxes but just keep in mind that it's not the normal "street corner box" we are talking about here. The ones used for extension/reach are significantly larger to contain the batteries for dc power, inverters and all the other crap that goes with it.

@Merenwenrago

Sometimes you can get water in there which could affect things or you could simply have a bad termination. There are no real electronics in those 'boxes' you are referring to.

ive noticed depending on my weather my noise and attenuation changes does that mean theres a problem?

good days DS Line attenuation is 24 and bad days its 26 (thought distant to exchange doesnt change unless theres interference on the line?)

good days DS Margin is 14 and bad days its 12 (thought this shouldnt change also)

so anyone know where the problem lies telkoms claiming its my pc's lol

Not sure if this help, measure the DC voltage across the RJ11 telephone plug (inner two connectors)

64V dc on a 4 Mb Line
Line voltage is normally 48v DC +

ADSL Link - DOWNSTREAM - UPSTREAM
Connection Speed 4096 kbps 512 kbps
Line Attenuation - 12 db - 2.5 db
Noise Margin - 12 db - 13 db

Do you have any noise on the line ?

when i tried 1 mbit line just to see, it was fluctuating and had bad noise would have thought 4 mbit would be worse but its better lol there is noise but not as bad

the noise levels for 1 mbit was going between 12 and 22 for margin forgot to check the attenuation at this line speed

and how do i check its voltage using a voltmeter or is it a special meter? and where do i get one also?

Normal voltmeter set to DC volts ?
Line noise is a problem on your line - on one of the forums a forumite had a similar problem
and when the techie went round tugging on the wires at one spot, it simply parted indicating serious
corrosion

In the old days Telkom techies could phone the MDF room and they conduct
a line test from the central exchange to your lline ? (cannot remember the terminology loop test - 20 years ago??)

These days they do it remotely via the LTS system.

everytime i get the same technician and he doesnt tug on the cables though need to somehow get another one to my area.

I do have the managers number of the pietermaritzburg telkom for the technical side and he says its my pc having viruses affecting my noise on line lol and i doubt that never had viruses ever and no pc could affect a line at all and weather wouldnt affect my pc in return affecting my browsing lol.

So how do i get through to them if manager sucks and the technicians in PMB area lol

Cut the cable in such a way that that it is an intermittent fault - just joking.
Yes it can be frustrating when you get the same techie - tell him to bring his laptop and test the line that way

Thanks for the info, do the broadband helpdesk have access to the LTS system to check you line quality ?

Not sure but somewhere someone in the NNOC has access. Next time you phone them ask them if theey have access to LTS. I know I have my line tested before while I spoke to either the faults or adsl section, can't remember which.

Its been tested by the cape town call centre using LTS and they found that it had big interference but telkom in pmb claim my lines perfect when its not

Need to try the volt metre thing which was suggested

lol wind started and ds margin went to 9 from 14 :P still wondering what the weathers affecting on the line

also rained a bit too and the phone lines more noisy

If they have verified its a problem, call the manager in PMB , try an get a reference or contact person in LTS - just my 2c worth
