I have recently moved to an area where i am getting very weak signal on my 8ta network, i want to look into buying a signal booster so that i can get 3g again. some of these boosters are offered in different frequencies, what is the best bet for the 8ta network for my internet and voice calls on vodacom??

Hi glenvdm

Only operators can legally supply or install boosters as this is a licensed frequency that they pay for in terms of license fees.

Thanks for the info, but I was referring to boosters like the ones advertised on a website called Poynting. www.poynting.co.za are these illegal??

Boosters as in high gain antennas. They are 100% legal. Boosters as in repeaters are probably what 8ta was referring to.

We were referring to repeaters yes.

The frequency is 2100MHz

Apologies. Should not have jumped to a conclusion. It would be a bit awkward walking around with a mobile phone attached to an external antenna all the time though.

It is entirely possible to construct a GSM BTS using off-the-shelf components.
I am busy doing this. For the time being, it will be set to a low transmit power and the handset will be connected via a cable to the phone.

Overseas, it is possible to obtain a temporary license for testing purposes. However in SA I doubt that will be easy, and they will probably rip you a 100 years' worth of salary.

I'm wondering if i should put up a dish antenna at 2100MHz frequency to boost Telkom wcdma reception, i got a antenna from a friend that have no use for it and is pondering if it is the time and effort worth to set up the antenna and see if i get better signal form telkom.

The description on the antenna label is Model : NI2424G F : 2400-246 MHz/ G : 24dBi

Any advice would help.
have tried to look on google but no luck.
