UN: SA has highest number with Aids

Are you going to be popping that cork when a family member receives tainted blood after an accident? Or if your partner has an affair and passes the disease on to you? Probably easier focusing on the faceless 5 million isnt it.

Celebrating the death of millions might come easy to you but I like to believe the rest of us are a bit more civilised.

Unfortunately that's the price you have to pay. If you're ignorant/stupid enough to be with someone that's going to be sleeping around without a condom, then you deserve everything you get.

And tell me this, would you prefer to die of hunger because the Earth just cannot sustain 10 billion people or from a disease that can be moderately controlled? We celebrate heroes that died in a war for the greater good of the country, but you won't do the same for these people that die to save the rest of us?

I have family friends who run several businesses from their smallholding. They employ about 15 people, almost all of whom live on the property with their children and various other relatives.

In the past year alone, three employees have died of Aids-related illnesses. Since these family friends pay for all the medical bills of the staff, they are informed as to what various individuals suffer from. Sox63 there is an absolute conspiracy of silence on the smallholding when it comes to Aids. None will admit it, speak about it, or seek treatment for it.

Two weeks ago the 20-yr old daughter of the one of the employees (she had been born and raised on the smallholding) died of Aids. Her mother denied and denied and denied what she was suffering from. In fact when the death certificate was received, the mother brought the certificate to the family as 'proof' that it was not Aids. (The death certificate attributed her death to an Aids-related respiratory disorder).

The 20-yr old woman had a 2 year old son. The family had tried in vain to get antiretrovirals for the smll child... but her (now dead) mother and grandmother refused, denying that Aids was the cause of the illnesses of the child and mother.

The 2 year old is obviously infected with Aids, and her grandmother will not allow him to be treated for this. the kid is going to die, and soon, because he is not getting the treatment he needs.

It's sad that ignorance is killing people.

My sample size btw is larger- I have friends who are very involved with Aids orphanages in durban, and I hear similiar stories from them. My 'smallholding' story was anecdotal.

With the right medication, a person with HIV could live a decent life, however once it progresses to AIDS then you have to take care not to contract the opportunistic infections, like TB, which end up killing you becuase your body is utterly defenseless.

That causes another problem. We now have a large number of people with HIV with the potential to spread it further.

So I will say that while black people deny Aids in greater numbers than white people, there is also a huge contingent of black people who have done far more to fight ignorance about Aids than what white people have done.

How many showers, sex with innocent kids and beetroot cases are there to constitute a general dinial of AIDS?

I have lost a familly member, domestic helper and friends through HIV/AIDS. None resorted to showers, sex with innocent kids and beetroot as treatments of choice. In fact, they did not have proper treatment.

Yes, in my opinion, the educated ones were in denial. The less fortunate ones like my Domestic worker were not. She simply did not know. Whatever they case is, they got responsible about it.

There is an overload of education. "SA has the highest number" of people profiting and making their living from "Aids." It's a boom industry in a boom economy. Lots of German luxury cars at those endless conferenes. It is far too lucrative to fail.

I remember back in the 80's, it was projected that by year 2000 half of the SA population would be wiped out, and that industries would be crippled with the lack of skills and labour.

Fact is, SA population growth continues unabated.

The "millions" of people dying have been dying since the dawn of time from TB, maleria, pneumonia, malnutrition, etc. But these old diseases are just not sexy enopugh to rake it in from guilt-ridden doner funds and goverment coffers. Aids is far more newsworthy. And it has the added benefit that you can attribute Aids to just about any non-violent death.

"Pandemic" and "Aids orphans" are terms that just strike the right chords to part fools from their money.

i just recently went on "hiv training for managers" at one of the big 4 banks. there were some scary statistics there produced by the consultancy firm.

i've been looking for one of the statistics he mentioned, he said recently Anglo's CEO publically stated that the HIV prevelance rate for his company was at 45% of a total over 100 000 employees. I can only find last years one where they have stated 30%.

this consultant also pointed out discrepencies in the "official" government figures and the UN's figures, both have to be revised upwards.

There projections are that currently 8 million people in sa have aids. Also pointed out that last year 40% of all deaths was aids related. Combine all deaths from Tb, ,malaria, pnuemonia and you start to get the picture.....people with normal functioning immune systems do not die from these illnesses....only those whose imuune system is to weak from HIV.

and the scariest statistic of all is the one he presented that at a miniumum of 25% and upwards of our population will die in the next 5 -10 years!

The more humans around, the more humans that are around to suffer. How many do you think will suffer if we're at 10-15 billion when the planet stops supporting us? Seriously, dealing with people who are dying of AIDS, or even dying of AIDS yourself is a fricken walk in the park compared to that scenario.

Personally I suspect their apathy saves them from actually having to worry about the underpriveliged masses. No need to worry about upliftment schemes for them if they're all dead.
