Uncapped ADSL data pricing fight

And if they don't sort out their pricing, they will continue to lose out to areas doing private fibre networks... *patiently waits for his 100mb uncapped fibre line @R1400 to be installed* and sadly, no isp that goes through telkom can compete either

In the mean time it still baffles me to regularly read about the rise in telkom's share prices. Based on what? The reduced number of telephone connections?

Perhaps the mobile section that are increasing their share prices.

Let Telkom be... these ISPs should rather work on an accelerated fibre roll-out through partnerships with other ISPs and fibre infrastructure providers! Then Telkom can die away quicker!

The writing is already on the wall for ADSL in this country. Decreasing landline customers year on year, Telkom's refusal to even supply landlines to new housing developments, increasing competition from FTTH. It's almost a moot point to be arguing for naked ADSL now.

About a year ago, I switched back to capped ADSL because of the incessant shaping. I tried different service providers and they all had some shaping going on to the point that it became unusable at times. Has it become any better?

Video is on the increase because of Multichoices monopoly and high pricing.

Same view from my side. Wonder how things would have looked if more than 30% (Just guessing here) of SA even had access to a Telkom line. ISP's must start to invest in Wisp's also. lets face it, some will still be left out regarding Fiber connections.

ADSL remains the broadband connection of choice for many businesses and residential users, and until fibre services become widely available this is unlikely to change.

Ehhh, no, it's more like the connection of lack of choice.

Afrihost director Greg Payne said IPC bandwidth is charged at four times the cost of international bandwidth, which is an absurd situation.
There's the problem right there.

IPC isn't the problem for me. It's Telkom's refusal to let me use a line that's just sitting right next to me unless I pay them an exorbitant amount. Interesting how many people are willing to pay double the amount for fibre than what we do for dsl.

I agree re the WISPs. Between Fibre and wireless, ISPs can unshackle themselves from an unwilling partners - and customers will get the real choice they deserve.

It's pretty obvious that Telkom has basically given up on ADSL by virtue of the fact that they've completely given up on landlines.

I wonder why the main ISPs haven't seen the business case for this yet. I would gobble up a R300/month uncapped package backed by a fibre connection.

I kind of like Amobia, their prices is not the best, but if you put up a hotspot thing of theirs at your house you get 60% of the profit per connection. So they are able to grow a large WISP Network and the clients get paid for it.

Also look at wowfi, the owner came to my house with a techie to do a LOS test. Phoned the following Monday and apologised for not having LOS to my house, but he is in the process of making a plan for me to get more coverage in my area. Now that is awesome service. They are also priced well.
