Uncapped ADSL for R899

Hi matt156, As a consumer / end useri cannot think of anything that i could do to utilize my uncapped account with no P2P ..... ;) so many Linux distro's ........

But i think there will be many businesses that would love this sort of package as someone else already stated....

No - if skype is not working I'm not interested - otherwise I just might have been...

Why dont you guys get a little more imaginitive.
How about no p2p 8am to 8pm?
How will your no p2p affect voip and gaming ports?
What about streaming media?
Lastly their is a way around this no p2p story, just ask the iburst folk they know, so what happens if i do 100gb on http/ftp transfers.

:( and I was all excited. As a business, this would probably be a lot more attractive than Diginet but there are a lot that can handle easily on a standard cap.

As a home user, there's not a chance without the p2p... just for anime (no license), I use up around 15gb a month...

OK, from my point of view

No Skype, no static IP - no deal.

Skype + static IP @ R900 might have been OK - i am not much for p2p anyways.
As for the dyndns option - thats ok, but I already have that in my Linksys router. Also, I cannot rely on dyndns for email etc, since if my line is down for a few hours, someone else may get my (old) ip address and my mail goes "bounce".

So, no go.

Thanks for the feedback guys - exactly the type of stuff I'm looking for.

No prob.

BTW - have a look at all the threads from when UUNet started shaping p2p out of existence on their uncapped offerings (at a similar price to yours . . .hmm . . . interesting . . . coincidence?) people began to shift back to SAIX in droves - me included.

The problem with P2P is that it doesn't work on a multiplexed solution like broadband. At the end of the day someone has to pay for the bandwidth - there is a definite cost involved. It is also an "infinite" download medium - there is no ending to downloads, uploads etc. Http and FTP downloads are normally finite.

We may consider an after-hours P2P facility - open it up from 8pm or something. We also might open up local P2P for torrenting, etc.

Gaming, VOIP, streaming, etc, would all work as normal.

Skype is p2p is also VOIP - which model would it take? after hours? 24/7?

The problem you face is that p2p, in one guise or another, is here to stay. P2P is also a lot more than just torrents, kazaa and limewire.

I'm not a heavy P2P user but if I would need to use it I would certainly want my R899 account do be able to do it. Even if it's limited to say 128kbps or something like that, but not completely blocked.

Skype, VOIP, etc will still work on the service.

POtenc - we may consider a limited P2P service. Eg after hours only, plus local P2P 24/7. But the account is only FEASIBLE at R899 per month if users don't go mad with P2P. Again, P2P negatives a multiplexed service like broadband.

We should be able to. Unfortunately NOTHING can be guaranteed on South Africa's troubled ADSL network for any long period of time (as the 30GB ISPs are finding out). But access will be on a month-by-month basis - no contracts.

matt156.

I suppose a good question to ask would be, besides the no p2p what other shaping would be implemented?

also would it not be okay to allow p2p but at a very low priority (ie. everything else comes first)?

Will you give test accounts - I would like testdrive it for 24hours before I make a decision....

The only shaping will be on P2P - everything else will run fine.

Perhaps a low priority P2P system. The problem is that by its very nature P2P opens up a lot of connections, which cause congestion - it's not just a throughput issue. But I think an after hours international P2P coupled with 24 hours local P2P service could be implemented.

Two or three concurrent connections would also be nice? Can you give any info regarding this matt156?
