Screamer - [R399 uncapped 384k] sounded good, no show when it came to delivering a decent service.
Digichilli - [R300 for 256k burstable] sounded even better, but as more people are subscribing the speeds appear to be degrading. Work is said to be happening but will need to keep an eye on this. 256k service offered - burstable.
SAOL - [R499 incl 384k ADSL line - value R152] was frowned upon initially by many as you had to move your ADSL line but by all accounts speeds for downloads are good even during business hours. 384k service offered.
Cybersmart - [R514 for uncapped 384k service] no information on their website but apparently an offer similar to SAOL but at about R20 more per month
Hmm, things seem to be changing. I am hearing talk of the Screamer system not being that bad after all. But then again, the overall package (incl 384k line rental) works out R52 more expensive than the SAOL offering which by all accounts is currently the best in terms of reliability and speed.
These uncapped offerings aren't good enough. I will not downgrade to 384kb....feels like freaking dial-up. Phew.
Updated my first post for my benefit (and perhaps others). Comments welcome.

Screamer - By some accounts Screamer seems to have improved. Still talk of shaping happening though.
Digichilli - Now appears to be dead in the water...
SAOL - Still sounding like a good option. So far the only negative anyone has come up with is changing the line across to them (something I do not have an issue with as my line is currently with Nashua anyway)
Cybersmart - Also sounds more and more interesting. Price is more expensive but there is a secret offering that is meant to come out soon. Trouble is I am not a fan of buying a product that I cannot read all the terms and conditions for...
I'm on OpenWeb where i'm running on their half month fullspeed uncapped offering. I am quite happy with the service recieved and even got support on XMAS eve ... howzat?![]()
True - however I'm not willing to downgrade my 4 meg ... might have to if there are no decent offers out there. I know Afrihost and Openweb is busy working on something .... I can vouch for both as I've had awesome service from the both of the ISP's and in terms of quality you can't go wrong.
If we could just get 1 meg during the day and full speed uncapped after hours and weekends it would be much appreciated ... at a decent price .... here's hoping
Lancelot what is your line speed?
I need to find another account, i just cant keep justifying R899 a month for internet, plus another R400 or so for the line.
Thing is I look at people saying 40kbs downloads and Im about to cry! I complain if i get under 180kbs! I guess I will just have to live with getting slow speeds i suppose. Will save me money.
On the up side, I assume these accounts can download during the day too? Cause the axxess one is so dead in the day i turn off all downloads to try browse.
I am willing to pay .... however like Rurapente said R900 per month excluding line rental for an ISP is not just a little steep its daylight robbery. Yup might downgrade in January perhaps .... and (can't believe I'm saying this) wait a little longer for my downloads to complete.
Should make it easier financially ... spend more quality time with my GF and save on storage and media ....
So yes some perks ... some![]()
....10? More like 11 ... including overhead protocols, network conditions etc.
by a multiple of about 10
Compared to the states SA is lacking big time ...we all know this. Trust me I've been abroad and you wont believe pricing compared to what we are experiencing over here.
Course I'm making a noise in regards - we need better and affordable structures which are alligned with the states and international. Might not happen overnight but it will certainly be for the greater good of ADSL users in SA.
A lot of ISP's where running and still are without knowing that you get 4 meg on a 384k account .... Check the AXXESS ussage stats for instance ....
I think you've misunderstood how the package works
