Uncapped ADSL pricing comparison

I use an IS uncapped account, never had any problems with any threshold. Not sure if its only open to companies though.... I don't really use it much though, we've got emails and radio and some p2p going on, monthly usage is only about 15-20gigs (mostly email for 15 users)... but it works fine enough... think it costs about R2000 for a 1mbit account.

20gb? why dont you just get a 20gb afrihost account (29 x 20 = R580). That will run at full speed (4mbs) and cost you R1400 less....

you can thank me later

I think the word 'uncapped' needs to be redefined.

I see it as unthrottled, 24x7, no rolling threshold, no max GB!!

Apparently none of the ISP's see it as this :(

too true. is there some international telecoms body that has defined the term uncapped?

The only reason it's high end is because of the high price. These are low or below low end services overseas.

I think stuff should be called out for what it is.
For example, if a Toyota costs R100000 overseas and R1000000 in SA does that give us the right to call it a supercar here :)

high end is a relative term. if that toyota was the best car you could get compared to say one of those 1l engine cars, then it would be high end. Your point about it being inferior to other products in the world is taken though.

Thats what I thought but then how can it be downloading at that speed on a 512 service?

cause even a 384k account on a 4Mb line will get that after hours and weekends, its just how it works .
That is why this Top10 user (on http://www.axxess.co.za/uncapped.php) get this - account: 384kbit/s total in month: 873 GB
The only reason to go for the more expensive acounts is if you want a higher throttled speed during office hours.

Please get used to the term uncapped ff's it's here to stay, they are even implementing in the US and australia, yes the cap is 500GB but it's still capped.

I'll live happily with the 8pm 8am arrangement, but my budget only allows for roughly R900 and that's incl telkom...

Its not that we aren't used to the term - its just that the term doesn't mean what it says.
Uncapped means without limits. There is no harm in preserving the words meaning, matter of fact its pretty damn important.
Tally Ho.

That the thing. More people would go for Axxess type uncapped services, at around R900 all inclusive.

And then there is Vanilla say Not Capped internet from R35.

At least they no longer say "uncapped". The Vanilla "uncapped" wording was discussed in a heated debate a few months back. It does border on untruth though... :)

Unfortunately even overseas "uncapped" quite often has an acceptable use policy (AUP) which limits you to a certain amount/month.
The thing is, their "caps" are reasonable, i.e. 200gb+ as opposed to ours, 5gb/10gb/20gb.

While all these prices are wonderful, you still have to pay almost R600/month (including phone line) to Telkom for crappy 4mb line rental that's not even guaranteed at 4mb, it's only guaranteed at 1mb.

If the 4Mb(8pm - 8am)/384k(during the day + throttle [I don't know how it works]) was R900 all-inclusive, I'd get it. :)

EDIT: Sorry about the grammar.

Had uncapped when i lived overseas - never had an AUP. With Comcast cable, or ATT DSL. I had a server running pulling down 60-250 gigs in a night.
Never heard a peep. This was in the US over the 8 years.

Was that a consumer service?

Yea - Cable bundle. $99 (R775) per month included my digital cable TV. (Think Multichoice) and 12Mb/s download 8Mb/s Up. Download would burst to 24 (20 effectively sometime in the late hours)
Believe me I MISS IT!

Makes me feel kind of ripped off, with what I'm paying for Do3. They only give me 5GBs. I guess we'll get there. :)

Hopefully before the sun burns out.

It will happen. Just be patient. The future is an online one, and SA does not have a choice. We must join the rest of the world, or we will fall behind, and I don't think we'll let that happen. As we have seen with the US, and others, broadband allows new types of services to be created. Just look at all the huge web companies that have been created. That has happened because those countries have lots of bandwidth and Internet users. How can SA compete in this new online world, if we don't up the ante? So, no... we won't have to "wait for the Sun to burn out". What we have seen in the cellphone market will happen with the Internet market. It's imminent. :)

Wonder if we will ever get uncapped internet here. Well not if but when.

I highly doubt it.

Just look at international trends all the major cable and ADSL companies are starting to institute caps from 60GB and up.

But we are still way off a 30GB standard offering!

I mean our idiotic ISP's have throttling from 20GB on uncapped accounts!

reading all this i am rather happy with my true uncapped wireless 1:1 internet. only 384 for 1800 but at least i get my full speed every time.
