Uncapped ADSL quality concerns from ISPs

Time to move to a capped service - using max 60gig p.m. and being "shaped" (sic) most of the time makes it not worth it - can just as well pay less and get constant speeds.

Afrihost director Greg Payne said that they cannot double their uncapped ADSL speeds, keep service levels the same, and still make a profit with the current high IPC prices.

“We don’t plan on dropping quality, so our margins – which are already extremely thin – are at risk here,” said Payne.

May I ask how their subsidiary was able to upgrade all customers to a higher uncapped dsl package then?

Stop moaning about the fact that you might no be able to give the "good" service to the customers and do something about it. If all the ISPs were to band together to institute a class action suit against telkom at the competition commission we might get somewhere. The problem is everyone is looking after their own pockets so things will just stay as they are. All ISPs have some sort of deal with Telkom and they are too scared to take them on in case they loose the deal.

Makes me sick.

if money is an issue then the obvious choice will be to jump to telkom. that 4mb uncapped price might be unbeatable. question will be what will the quality be like.

I think the ISPs have a point - its a real problem.

However, I also think they're exaggerating a bit. e.g. my usage won't double. I'd be surprised if it goes up 20%. Hell there is a chance that it'll improve in my particular case because I push through more of my usage during the graveyard shift....thus taking daytime load off the network.

I've been reading through the TI uncapped thread...kinda mixed bag it seems & heavy emphasis on shaping torrents to death.

I also looked around the Telkom site today...left more confused than when I started.

I'm just going to stay put on a 2mbps data account / soon 4mbps line until this blows over & there is more clarity.

Vox Telecom’s Douglas Reed said that they foresaw this trend, which was behind their migration back to the usage model.

“Our Fat Pipe solution caters for any size line, providing extremely affordable Internet bandwidth on a quality unshaped network,” said Reed.

Shut your fat pipe Douglas! Nobody likes being Capped!

Because Axxess is shyte, they throttle you when you so much as download an email, my fathers office constantly gets throttled and they block p2p and other heavy protocols so employees don't abuse the system

Ah well that explains it, I suppose it comes down to different brands, and product differentiation from the "two" companies

TBH I'd be happy if Afrihost didn't drop their prices to maintain the quality of the product, an extra R100 to double my account speed isn't going to break the bank for the consumer, but multiply that by each user being bumped up and they will either run at a loss, or adjust contention to a point where the service mimics mweb's. Wait till the IPC cost comes down before considering a price cut

Afrihost, remember what I said if you don't stay awesome ;)

If only my line supported speeds higher than 5Mbps... Doubling my 4Mbps isn't going to help much.

the only cause of the squeeze which the ISPs are feeling is that there is an expectation from the user base that line speed

By bundling uncapped product offerings with wholesale line rentals ISPs have created a risk for themselves which has no actual basis. The differentiation by Telkom on ADSL access on a "line speed" basis only serves as a means to lower a barrier to entry on lower end products and to ensure a 1:20 contention ratio on DSLAMs it is at this point entirely unnecessary and the ISPs should actually be arguing that Telkom Wholesale should offer only 1 price for ADSL and another for VDSL with the ISP determining the speed at which the account runs. However because ISPs have built an expectation that they will offer connectivity at line speed which is not the international norm.

Telkom only going decrease wholesale prices either in January or February. they banking on people switching back to their ISP between now and then

+1

@Telkom - simplifying that complicated website will attract more new customers than lowering prices. I can
't even find your new prices as announced on mybb.

And lose out on double charging customers for access though IPC and line rental? That's never going to happen.

I can understand the concern ISP's have about abusers but will most clients actually use more data?
I only need around 40 to 50GB per month so doubling my line speed should have no impact on my ISP.
I'll switch back to capped if the ISP's jack up the uncapped prices but I really like the peace of mind about not being capped or having to pay for OOB top ups.

I doubt if I'll use more data. I currently use around 150Gb per month and, unless streaming really takes off, I doubt if I'll use more when I get bumped to 4Mbps.
