Uncapped ADSL quality concerns from ISPs

I just need 200gb on a quiet month, and at most 400gb when the steam summer sale comes around. Doubling my line speed has not and will not increase my usage at all.

I don't think the problem is using more data, it's that data throughput is going to increase as a result of the speed bumps and thus put more strain on the already strained networks. At least that's my understanding.

Most ISPs are already restricting (managing) network use so what will be new? Why would increased speed change that? I have never seen MyBB tackle a story like this with such a glass half empty approach? When Mweb opened pandoras box with uncapped internet... Who would have thought actually having to give the customer what they are paying for would be the problem? The simple fact is most ISPs throttle when you use too much. They will do it more aggressively now. Quality will not be the issue, the issue is if the smaller ISPs have what it takes to stay in the game until next year when they can put prices up.

Maybe ISPs should stop moaning and start delivering on at least half the things they promise. A happy client is unlikely to move ISPs for a few Rands saving. The problem here is alot of ISPs have been shafting their customers, giving them below standard services and suddenly Telkom goes from dirty word to shiney "White Knight"
And nobody saw that coming :)

Well blame yourselves for starting this uncapped price war disaster..

the only cause of the squeeze which the ISPs are feeling is that there is an expectation from the user base that line speed

By bundling uncapped product offerings with wholesale line rentals ISPs have created a risk for themselves which has no actual basis. The differentiation by Telkom on ADSL access on a "line speed" basis only serves as a means to lower a barrier to entry on lower end products and to ensure a 1:20 contention ratio on DSLAMs it is at this point entirely unnecessary and the ISPs should actually be arguing that Telkom Wholesale should offer only 1 price for ADSL and another for VDSL with the ISP determining the speed at which the account runs. However because ISPs have built an expectation that they will offer connectivity at line speed which is not the international norm.

The "international norm" is having several hundred megabit fibre, cable or VDSL lines though. So even 50% or 20% of 100Mbps is a hell of a lot faster than 100% of 2Mbps. We're basically at decent speeds for the internet of 2001 now, where you just basically browsed and downloaded small programs and the occasional patch, maybe even logged onto IRC once in a while. In 2013 with HD streaming, online content distribution and many always-online devices and services in the average home, our puny ADSL services are becoming a bit dated. And it's only getting worse. We need every bit of bandwidth we can get.

cooool.... i checked the ADSL availability checker on Telkom site... they upgraded my line to 10Mbps from 4.
uncapped doesnt really help me,... still on capped account, but at least faster speed will be yay!
will check tonite if its really faster

I'm definitely not going to be using double my bandwidth because my line speed has doubled. If I use 15% more that will probably be a lot. I think this would be the same for most people.

Can anybody please verify for me if "every" adsl landline from ISPs get upgraded, such as my 1MB from MWEB. Or is it "only" Uncapped Telkom subscribers?

Am I missing something here.... Telkom give a free upgrade to line speed, ISPs assume this means they must give free upgrade to account speed? Why?

I'll pay more for a "bigger" account" if i need it, otherwise i'll stick to my OW 4mb uncapped.

Even people on 1mb accounts can stay on it, upgrade to 2mb if they need it.

Yes Telkom Internet (Telkoms ISP) did just that they gave through a free upgraded or one so close to free as to count. Up until Telkom Internet did this no one was complaining. Ironically it was Axxess (a subsiduary of Afrihost) who first gave a free upgrade. Telkom Internet jumped on the bandwagon assuming all other ISPs were going to follow...
The question now is who will be the next ISP to blink? Mweb has a massive Naspers bankroll so maybe they may look at killing the oposition as well?
Honestly it is anyones guess what will happen next, just grab some popcorn and enjoy the ride :)

Openweb have introduced a new product that matches the higher contention ratio's offered by Axxess and Telkom. However they are keeping other existing products in place. So giving consumers the choice I guess.

This will only affect service levels if ISPs automatically adjust data accounts in line with line speed upgrades. So far it is only Telkom Internet and Axxess that have done it.

Will the others follow?

I'm not on uncapped, and with AH, not Telkom broadband, and at last the line is up to 10Mbps, (as per ADSL checker in anycase), where used to be 4Mbps
So they probly upgrading as they go along.
not sure if i'll really notice the faster speed, as we do mostily browsing and some streaming which worked fine on 4Mbps... but maybe if wife and 2 kids busy youtube we'll get overall better speed.
but usage should stay relatively same

I'm still waiting for the other ISPS (EXCLUDING MWEB) to match what TI is offering on the table. Hurry up and announce your offers!!!! I'm dangerously leaning towards TI right now!!!!

I won't mind staying on a 2mb ISP account if my line increases to 4mb. IMO, speeds will be better, as you will then get very close to full 2mb speeds.

I'm with most of you, my downloads won't all of a sudden spike. I'm in that "groove" now, so doubt it I will do more. I said it before, if I can get a 100 or 150gb capped bundle on a 4mb line for under R500, I will take it immediately.

Ahhhhh at last some progress is made in bringing us a step closer to world class internet. Hope we are not going to hava a bunch of cry baby ISP every time an improvement is made. I don't see what the fuss is all about. Surely if your line is upgraded, you can stay on the same package and be throttled to the package you are paying for, or upgrade to a more expensive package from the ISP to complement the new line speed you have.

Can MyBB run an article indicating how many of the South African population is using ADSL vs the rest (if this has been done, then give link). This picture will show that only a small portion of the current population is using ADSL. Now fathom this, what if the majority of the population starts to use ADSL will the ISPs be able to handle this? If yes, then why are they complaining about a speed upgrade?
