Quick question about bandwidth on an uncapped solution:

If my ISP claims I have purchased a 512kb Uncapped Solution but my line is 1024/4Mb ADSL, what would be the effects on the line speed, etc.?

If I were to say purchase a 1024kb Uncapped Solution (for R1000 more) would there be obvious benefits?

Well , if u buy a 512K uncapped account u will get speeds of 512K maybe a little more over international / local. Sometimes IS is generous after hours by allowing a little more speed. But it is mostly speed limited to 512K.

So even if u have a 4mbit line, u'll prolly see speeds of around 55kb per sec to 60kb per sec on average. After hours and weekends you might see 70kb per sec at times, but it'll be rare.

If u get the 1mbit uncapped, u get around 110kb per sec on average , maybe seeing 130kb per sec :>>

Yes it means ur ISP will throttle ur speed to the speed u brought, which is 512k....So unless ur line is at a lower speed, u will see a max of 512k from ur uncapped account.

But if u get a 1mbit account, on that line you have right now, there will be obvious benefits....
But personally I dont think it will be that much of a difference....

Thanks.

I am getting a 1 month trial for a 1024kb Uncapped Solution. Will find out next week if it makes any difference.

Have you ever used Skype on your uncapped solution?

I want to go uncapped, but am currently using a SAIX connection, what is it like on IS?

No point in paying for the 4mb(1mb) line if you are only gonna get 512k uncapped.

Either lower your line speed to 512k or get the 1mb uncapped account.(I think its the fastest option at the moment, not sure)

Mismatching your line and ISP speed on uncapped accounts means u r gonna be wasting money somewhere.

Openwebs 1mb Uncapped gives us more than 1mb on our 4mb line at work.

We have seen the 1mb account run on a 4mb line run at almost 2mb.

Having said that if you look at the average cost of uncapped 1mb at R 2200 would you consider R 8 000 for uncapped 4mb ? as we have looked at lauching this service however it is expensive.

Unfortunately not yet... latency has been an issue. Hopefully with the upgrade I will be able to give you some positive feedback.

Turns out the whole story was we got the 1Mb line and at the time there was only one option for uncapped - when we *eventually* got the line installed 6 months later (tx Telkom  ) the product had been altered to that price for 512kb. We were not informed. So I am a little pi$$ed off with our ISP at the moment especially since we now have to pay R1000 more a month for the upgrade.
