Uncapped Internet caused data explosion in South Africa

It depends on how they measure it, if they only count ingress traffic (traffic originating from outside the network) then 12 petabits per second sounds a bit high. However, if they count all traffic across all their fiber links than that is a very realistic number.

Just a dumb example, but you downloading at 10mbps (lucky bugger with 10mbps ADSL!) and your traffic crosses 10 of their core routers it could be counted as 100mbps of traffic.

Tbps is quite possible. 12000Mbps is pretty damn insignificant when it comes to the bandwidth being pushed by an entire country. I mean, that's 1200 10Mbps connections, which is absolutely nothing.

Really? Why do you say that? Digital data transmission is not really a finite resource. It can grow almost infinitely as more transmission paths are added and transmission technology improves. International bandwidth is as cheap as chips and getting cheaper. I don't see the scarcity problem, here.

You can say one thing about South Africans, but those of us using internet connections to replace "outdated" legacy means of accessing media etc. know what we're doing. I guess it's years and years of cultivating mindsets to make the best use of the little we have.

Who would've thought that the ones holding back progress was them? Who would've thought that as data became cheaper, more and more people would find it no longer a luxury but a very accessible form of entertainment that they are very willing to pay a certain price for? That they could perform tasks on the net without fear of hitting the dreaded cap and not being able to use the Premium Priced Internet for basic functions like email?

Telkom, epic fail as usual and late to the bandwagon as usual. Catch a wake up chinas, there is a reason why China has such epic broadband penetration with the largest population in the world (of whom many don't even earn the same as our dustbin collectors).
 
No no, our research shows that the average user does not consume more than 100meg per month - ergo, we will be wasting money if we upgrade our lines to handle more bandwidth...

PS: Can someone please send Moholi at Telkom a memo pointing out that when everyone has decent speed at decent prices Telkoms current capacity will not be enough

Telkom launched its own uncapped ADSL accounts towards the end of September 2011 after Mweb set the South African ADSL market on fire by launching affordable uncapped accounts.
