hanns, before you get too excited I would suggest you do the math. At the moment you say you get a min of 8Kbytes in infosat, which I would guess is costing R300-R350 a month. This implies a contention ratio of about 1:8.
What Depach is offering is a 1:50 share ratio on a 512kbit segment, so basically the min would be about 1.28Kbytes a second, for R400.
Of course this is the worst case scenario. If you are hoping to get back your 30K/s speeds you are very hopeful, this would only happen if you and one other out of the 50 possible subscribers were online.
Anyway, I am glad depach is looking into alternate sources as the simple fact that infosat can offer greater bandwidth at lower cost suggests there are cheaper providers, and since depach has indicated profit is not his main motivation here I would expect this to reflect in the service offering either as lower prices or greater bandwidth.
Also I would not suggest using the pent@ cards, especially not the entry level ones. They have horrible drivers. They can't do TV and are not supported by any third party software. Technisat make a card called a SkyStar2, its cheap (+-R650), works well with most OS's and can do TV stuff. Most European Sat ISP's package this card with their deals.

I've been using the pent@net card for nearly 4 years now without any problems. I've had a look at the specs of the SkyStar2, as you suggested and it does look interesting. I'm presuming they are available in SA, can you give me an idea where I can get my hands on one?

As far as I know the Skystar2 card is not available in SA yet, no idea why since it offers more and is cheaper.
Even so, you will find it cheaper to import the Skystar2 card from UK (retails for about £55) than to actually buy the pent@ card locally which retails in the R1000 region.

I just realized that you mentioned that you're able to connect to the vpn server via adsl, which I didn't think was possible. Would you mind explaining to me how you're able to do so (my e-mail is [email protected])?

I didnt have to do anything special. I just use the VPN like anyone else. I have never heard from Infosat themselves or any of the resellers of thier service that using fixed lines or adsl or anything other than a stupid dialup is somehow not allowed or even discouraged. After all its not actually going to make your download speeds any faster.

thanks for the info. i was told by the mweb broadband support guy that it would not be possible to connect to the vpn server using adsl (due to ip filtering). i guess he was just lying. by the way, who are your satellite and adsl isps?

Unless Mweb has done something specific to prevent you from using ADSL to connect to the VPN server, he's talking rubbish.
I use WOL as my satellite ISP and have no problems connecting on my ADSL line.

I would most definately be interested. Provided that I can use emule and ed2k at regular speeds. I find that they don' play well with a proxy. I already have an extra dish and decoder at home because I bought a dial view for the kids.(Dam Kids). They hate sport and I hate Kids TV.

And since the vpn server is operated by infosat I very much doubt there is anything any isp can do to prevent you connecting with whatever line you choose. All the ISP's can really do is update the username/password and MAC addresses.

LOL i just read threw this whole topic , and yeah its dead ... all i see is anothere one of thoes services promesing the moon and the stars ,peaple must understand , that if they wana play with the big boys like telkom they must also be big boys so u cant come into this buissness with even with a million dollars and promise peaple no cap brillent servcie and so on .At the end of they day all this companys like infoset syntech and so on are nothing compared to telkom and with one statement from telkom a price change or something this companys can be wiped out like flys , telkom realy has NO competion
