Hi All,

I have read mos tof the stickeys and recent topics here on mybroadband but i cant seem to find the information that im looking for.

I recently moved here from europe (24mbit Uncapped for R250 /me cries) and now ofcourse iw ill be needing internet at home so that i can spend hal fmy life playing WoW and pwning newbs. Anyways, ive called telkom and ordered a DSL+phone package and looking at my location im assuming that they should come and install within a few weeks, I did not buy or pick an ISP yet.

Im looking for an Uncapped provider that does not ***K around, and i most certainly dont appreciate having to call a helpdesk wich is run of a mobile phone or that has mentally "hilarious" employees. A little bit of service cant be that hard to get, i mean with a country filled with 98% "Executives" im sure theres one or two that knows what hes doing ;-)

Anyways at the moment im looking at Imagine, seeing that they also have Uncapped access to the IS news server.

So basically my questions are:
- How is Imagine ?
- How is the IS News server ?

If i placed this topic wrong, im sorry :)

Wel in total (including telkoms line) i dont want to spend anything more than R2000 per month. This seems reasonable to me atleast.

As for the traffic, im used to leaching wel over 500gigs per month so a tiny package wouldnt do me alot of good. the 512k is actually crap asswell but it fits the budget and atleast i would be able to play WoW and use ventrillo.

Lol okay i can see that there arent alot of telkom fans here, but as you might well know.. we have no choice! Either have Telkom and have inet or be lonesome and a queer without inet :D

but to get back the the sole reason why i started this topic: Does anyone here have experience with Imagine ? Or any other Suggestions regarding 512kb Uncapped. ?

Well i'm running openweb uncapped and it's quite a nice solution.

Runs through IS network so your international pings at least to uk will start at around 600ms for games.

You get uncapped 512 for about I thik R1.4kish(check their website for precise prices. Im on a special uncapped so i pay a bit less :P)

All in all i've had pretty decent service from them. Just a bit of a bother trying to reach them in the beginning or end of a month but other than that its all good :-D

Other good point to mention is that their customer representive is on this forum a lot and responds quite fast usually to posts.

Well that's just my little 2 cents :)

Get Openweb uncapped and then get a separate prepaid unshaped SAIX account for WOW.

Okay now running 2 accounts is waay out of the question!

The guy from IS said that they offer an Unshaped and Uncapped.

Wel can someone please explain me the difference between Shaped and Unshaped.

During business hours, p2p trafic runs about 50% slower. No shaping off-peak.

I'm also with Openweb on a 1024k uncapped package. I also took advantage of a MyADSL special. With the internet portion of Telkom Closer I'm paying R1600pm inclusive.

I don't do 500Gigs/pm. Only about half that.

I guess I could do 500Gigs/pm, though, if I didn't have a life. :)

If you going to be playing games, especially international then don't go with IS, you'll need a saix account. I think what you asking for is too much and I believe the IS uncapped accounts cap you after you do 30gigs anyways and its not true uncapped, and they cap you if you do more than 10 gigs in 10 days, just read the details its not truly uncapped. You going to have to reduce your bandwidth usage substantially. R2000 per month just to download is a bit insane if you ask me, you know you deserve better for your money

My suggestions is you get:
1. ADSL (512kb or 4mbit(appx R350 or R510)
2. 5 gig or 10 gig saix account (R350-500) or a 4gig unshaped package from Verizon
3. 30 gig local only account (R120) They hardly cap you after 30 gigs, I did 60 gigs last month using the news server. There isn't enough content too get you to do over 100 gigs per month

In total you'll be looking at R800-1100

The Openweb uncapped accounts are truly uncapped, I've done over 200GB/month with no problems.

Hello dotnerd...

When playing World of Warcraft (like I do :) ) I recommend using a WebAfrica Prepaid Unshaped account, 1GB costs you R120. That data you purchase also runs forever, it works like cellphone prepaid and you never lose it, and you only pay R120 again whenever you want another 1GB.
IS backbone will get you very high latency, Unshaped will be 220 - 400.

If you going for an uncapped connection, OpenWeb is the answer, and you can do all your international torrents/downloads with that, much better using international torrents than the IS News Servers in most cases. However depending on what you are after, if its series and movies you might aswell spend R130 on a Local Only account (30GB) and get the series which is cached on the IS News Server.

All depends what you download and from where you are downloading, obviously most of your traffic in the EU was local (in terms of within europe), so if you can find a local place to get what you want you can save yourself some cash.

Okay,

I can see that people have quite opposite opinions here.

Reason why i need uncapped is mainly due to the fact that we are 3 people living together, and all play different games and do different things on the net. If i would have to changle dsl accounts every 3gigs id go insane and if i had to measure every MB used to determine whos gonna pay what id kill myself too.

The budget we set together incl telkom is a maximum and obviously id prefer if it were a bit cheaper.

Most of the providers ive seen thus far are IS backboned, and some people say that they have good experiences and others dont. I rang IS again and unfortunately the guy i had on the phone did not even know what data retention was, and i specifically asked him if the monitored the uncapped accounts, wich according to him they dont. (Bearing in mind that he is a sales person and wants his commision :) )

PS: I cant find any Uncapped SAIX Services on Openweb`s site ? Any other companies doing SAIX ?

As far as I know, there are no uncapped SAIX accounts. On SAIX you pay a fixed rate per Gig.
