Uncapped shaping: between a rock and a hard place

To use the old expression.
I have (and have had for years) an MWeb Premium Uncapped 4mbps account. Since they started throttling users for "excessive usage" (lol...), I started looking for alternatives. I settled on Afrihost Uncapped (not the business package, the normal one).

The main reason I went for Afrihost was due to their promise that they have "ample bandwidth capacity" and only shape when they need to, and only for as long as is necessary. Now, it should be noted that my Netflix streaming makes me what you could probably call a "high-end bandwidth user". I usually pull down about 200GB per month. But most of this is from streaming, very rarely from downloading or torrents.

However, I've been shaped to absolute death since late last month. It is now in the new month, and I'm still shaped. And when I say shaped, I mean SHAPED. I get about 30kbps download speed on a 4mbps line. Sure, my browsing is unaffected, but I don't have an uncapped account to just browse all damn day long.

In the end I contacted their customer support (the level of their support, and their client interaction was another reason I went for them) and got a rather "whatever" standard copy/paste reply a day later saying, in effect, that I must deal with it (TM). Their live chat-based support hasn't worked for weeks now, and I'm stuck in the water starting to regret my decision.

Ironically, my (for now still active) MWeb account is blazingly fast. I don't really want to stick with MWeb however, since at any time they can decide to throttle me and I'd be even worse off. So I started looking around at other ISP's out there. It seems all of them are pretty much the same. OpenWeb got some good reviews for their Gamer Uncapped accounts, but seems that during normal hours it's also rather rough going. WebAfrica got some bad reviews for their uncapped. I have no idea what the TelkomSA uncapped quality is (although I'd imagine it's not good at all).

TL;DR version: What options are there, and what would you recommend? I can't have 2 uncapped accounts running concurrently, it's starting to cost me.

Plugg, Openweb, Telkom, Afrihost or webafrica: they don't throttle.

I know they don't throttle :) But I also don't want draconian shaping. I understand and mostly agree with "fair shaping" (although the term is thrown around alot), but shaping my downloads to 30kbps is ridiculously stupid and in the end, almost worse than MWeb's throttling.

Basically pay for a decent account.

Openweb Gold or Afrihost business.

Although 200Gigs on a 4Meg line shouldn't be abuse.

More than likely something is wrong.

Shaping Policy: 18.8% Download/ 6.25% P2P
From the Afrihost Client Zone. My usage for this month so far is about 12GB. Hence my frustration.

How does the Afrihost Business Uncapped compare with the normal uncapped? I know it has zero shaping, but how's the MTN network? And aren't the IPC's overloaded?

It seems that the network (or the IPC's, or probably both) are overloaded. Which flies in the face of the comment that they have "more than enough network capacity". I'm not ranting, I'm just worried about BS statements affecting consumer decisions.

They have been having a high amount of shaping recently. PM AfriMan and hear his story. Would suggest Business Uncapped for your situation though. It's not that expensive.

Understatement. Clearly you haven't seen the AH Uncapped thread the last couple of days. :)
I've seen it. Not currently experiencing the problem - well torrented up and using the gigs I've got with Telkom. Looking at the situation as a fan of Afrihost who recognizes potential problems on the facts presented there is a particular problem (my brother-in-law is having no shaping problem on his well used Afrihost account) requiring a PM to Afriman. I think Afrihost are having a couple of problems at the moment but they iron it out.

I totally get where you are coming from, and just want to say thanks for posting this thread, I think what you are experiencing covers a few key issues that many of our Uncapped clients are feeling as well.

Firstly, just want to say that while there is always the possibility of technology misbehaving or under-performing in the real world, service can and should be guaranteed. No matter what we're going through, we should always be delivering good service & information.

We know that the shaping on downloads on torrents is not ideal and in many ways this is not the Uncapped experience we would like to deliver. However, due to the current strain on the network due to demand, we believe this is the absolute best experience we can deliver at this moment in time. We are also working on some short term and long term solutions to improve this for now, and also to cater for these type of anomalies in the future.

I have received your PM, and let's chat about what we can do for now for you to get the best experience we can deliver (by whatever means) until we sort out our issues on our end :(

Thanks, Paul. I believe we've gone through a long journey together with many of our clients and we've always delivered for our clients, and found ways to thank them for their patience and reward them for sticking with us through the rough times.

We will get this sorted out :)

Have you tried using your Turbocharge in ClientZone? Might come in handy, always forget about it. Also you can then see if its a line fault or just plain shaping

Great advice. Turbocharge is a great tool, and you get 5 free ones (and a pretty cheap topup rate). Please make use of the sessions :)

Evening aktor,

With your usage patterns you should not be affected by throttling on your MWEB account.

I know that due to us choosing to enforce our AUP differently has made you opt for an alternate account.

The change was made for clients like you to obtain a better all round experience on our network.

Sometimes we search for things we've had in our lives all along ;)
