I am really hoping you can offer me some sound advice here as a private user. I am currently using Mweb as my ISP and a Telkom Home DSL 512 line. I am finding, due to the fact that I am using one particular high volume site a great deal, that I am using in excess of 10 gig a month, which has to be paid for in these ridiculous 1 gig and 3 gig traunches, an extremely expensive exercise. I would also like to upgrade the speed of my line, but where I live in Johannesburg, the highest speed available to me is 512 according to Telkom. I am finding that the Telkom costs of Home DSL of R317.54 when added to the Mweb line usage costs on the usage I am going through to be absolutely crazy price and a real rip off.

Can anyone please advise me who I should contact with regards to finding an ISP than can supply a higher speed line that gives me uncapped usage, but also supplies good customer support. I am not au fait with this technical stuff, so I am not sure what changes need to be made regarding wiring, installation etc, so as much info and detail as possible would be a real bonus for me.

Thank you in advance for any advice you are all able to offer me.

if telkom say no speed higher than 512 is available, you just have to wait till they upgrade your exchange..which may take some time....

but as for uncapped internet, you can get openweb as a ISP, they got uncapped 512, on speial for 999 rand, which is cheapest available in SA. if you were using 10gigs of mweb @ 300per 3 gig, thats about the same price as just getting the uncapped from Openweb.

go to openweb.co.za and check out their packages. you should also check out webafrica.co.za, if you dont want uncapped, then 10gig accounts are available from both ISPs for much cheaper than you were getting from mweb. Both ISPs offer great customer support.

Thank you so much for referring me to webafrica and openweb, I am using 10 gig a month under controlled circumstances and would use alot more if I knew it was uncapped. So your suggestion is a great one and I am really greateful for the advice Thank you again HaNsa. I guess there is nothing I ca do abt Telkom, the damend comapny is a law unto themselves and i wonder if they realise that as soon as a competitor comes in RSA they will lose sooo much of their business. Maybe thats why there aren't any yet!!!!!!!

^5 Thank you

Okay, here we have an example of a user that has stated under controlled conditions he is using 10GB or more and would use even a greater amount of data if he is able to know he is uncapped.

He goes on to say he is with M-Web meaning his costs for internet probably runs into around R800 - R1 000 just for the ISP portion.

The recommendation, OpenWeb, here is indeed a really smart move, obviously beaing aware of the conditions that are applied to the uncapped accounts and also the I.S network in its current status.

Uncapped 512kbps @ R999 sounds to be a good solution, but he goes on to recommend WebAfrica. WebAfrica costs R490 for 10GB. if he spends the R800 often he can get 2x WebAfrica for R980 and have 20GB to work with. 4x TelkomInternet costs R996 and probably will get you around 60GB on a 512kbps line, but this is useless because you can get OpenWeb uncapped.

1x TelkomInternet basically always gets you 10GB for R249, my lowest being capped ever was 13GB. Highest 18GB (all post May 2006).

I continue to recommend the WebAfrica and TelkomInternet combo because TelkomInternet is actually better value for money if you are not affraid to use the account, and if you are capped being able to fall back onto a WebAfrica prepaid account, or something else that I have recommended before on the ISP thread.

The situation above probably will send the client to OpenWeb for an uncapped connection, but if a person is looking for 10GB of access, 10GB
WebAfrica would probably not be the best option, TelkomInternet with WebAfrica prepaid as backup or even 2x TelkomInternet would most probably be because of the fact that Relaxed Capping does allow you much more for less. If the client notices he is being cut off at 4GB then there is a problem and he/she should switch but that does not happen often according to stats on the website and my personal experience from my own connection and friends using TelkomInternet.

If someone can see my point great, otherwise,

I decided to rather put this as my reply here than make a new thread, but my question based on many threads I have been reading, people are recommending other ISP's that would actually cost the end user more per month than a TelkomInternet + <insert ISP> combo. I have been told many times already I need to cancel both my TelkomInternet accounts, and rather get a 10GB WebAfrica, but 10GB... I pay R498 with TelkomInternet and get bout 30GB - 40GB on my 512kbps line.

That was my personal point, if a user is being capped low maybe reconsider. Do keep in mind the value of being able to utilize the relaxed capping from an ISP such as TelkomInternet, the uncapped solutions from I.S if your budget allows, the prepaid aspect of WebAfrica and the Local Caps from OpenWeb. These can all be very useful, especially if bought and used correctly together.

o ya i see your point......if he doesnt want uncapped: y spend so much on 10gig accounts from webafrica and openweb wen he can just get a telkominternet package for 249 that would allow him 10gigs of usage :D

and then get a webafrica prepaid if need be........good idea :)

so its up to him......whether he really needs uncapped or not?

correct, but HaNsA I am not going against what you recommended at all, I have just noticed many people would rather go and say use the R490 10GB account, rather than even mention TelkomIntenret, and thats really why I made that post above asking the general forum opinion, why not use TelkomInternet if they are giving better value for money in most cases.

We already pay so much, might aswell try get the most out of our already overpriced service.

Okay MrG I have looked at what you said and that does indeed make more sense. Being an ignorant inexperienced home user, I am just not sure how you get Webafrica to kick in when Telconnect runs dry, please excuse my ignorance, but until now I have just used the one isp of mweb? In reality, if I were uncapped I may well go as high as 30 gig a month, as until now I have been very conscious of using certain features of the main site I use alot, but if I was let lose on uncapped I would take full advantage of every download feature available , if this makes sense?

FYI Webafrica did call me back within 5 minutes of me posting a note to their site which was quite impressive. Their uncapped product they quoted at R1500 per month. Last question, where do i find the location of the site I use alot as I am sure it is overseas, probably in the US, and would that mean I would have restrictions using Openweb's uncapped facility?

Thanks again for all great advice you guys I am really appreciative and sorry to be so dumb.

uncapped from openweb is completely uncapped, no restrictions whatsoever. you can use how much you like more than 100gigs a month :D if you want

to change accounts all you gotta do is put the username and password given to you by you ISP, in your router page. what router do you have?

edit: heres the openweb 512 special : http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=58695&highlight=openweb read through it

quote equinox (one of openwebs staff):

"And just to clear up, so that I don't have to reply to 100 emails asking the same question:

YES...Its uncapped. YES...its not throttled...YES...it gets you access to news-server...YES...we allow p2p...YES ITS TRUE"

There aren't actual restrictions on Openweb's uncapped, it just tends to be less reliable for international as it uses satellite as opposed to a SAIX connection which runs over the SAT3 cable.

As was said, you are supplied by a username and password for every account you might want to use, if one is capped then you simply change the username/password to the next account.

You can setup mutiple dialup accounts on your computer with the different usernames/passwords to simply switch around as you feel it is needed. Just set your ADSL router into Bridge Mode. If you are unsure about that just post which router/modem you use here and we can help.

The OpenWeb Uncapped just has international performance issues at times, being a sat link. TelkomInternet is SAIX which is fibre. The normal cost is a little higher but OpenWeb is the best place to get Uncapped in my personal opinion -> www.openweb.co.za
(R999 as mentioned before, currently on special)

The uncapped product seems to probably be the best route for you.

also just a point to remember when you move away from mweb you wont have your mweb email address anymore..........:( which may pose a problem for you if you use your mweb email alot

OpenWeb will be able to provide you with a free @openweb.co.za email address which will remain valid, even if you leave us (which I have faith, you wont :)).

Ye, from all the things i've heard about Openwebs uncapped it seems to work pretty well.. They do have some down time, but overall very good products...

Don't go for any IS based uncapped ADSL account...it really really sucks! Slow speed internationally and have a lot of down times... Rather wait till next year...Telkom has a surprize!;)

Telkom SAIX has a surprise? Probably increased caps if there even is anything.

:p Not saying anything yet...I'm not 100% sure, so leave it at that:)

I hear what U R saying about surprises from Telkom vampirO, but at what cost is my question and is it likely to suit my needs? I don't want down time, like us all i suppose and i would like something reliable and fast, as it involves playing music worldwide.

So any clues U can give me I would be grateful rather than jumping ship and tying myslef into a long contract.

I was going with openweb as originally suggested bu the user advising me that openweb and down time and connection speeds are bad is really scaring me, as I connot afford down times, and especially slow speeds due to the nature of the usage, does anyone else have any feedback regarding this please.

Thank you, and damn this is confusing
