My Samsung Galaxy S3 screen broke after 2 years and to fix it was going to cost ±R1500.

Because of this thread I bought a Hisense U970 Infinity from Kalahari.com. I'm very happy so far with 2 days of usage.

My dad picked up the u970 today. I played with it for a few minutes its definitely value for money. Call quality was good, felt well built and screen was responsive. Dual sim is also a nice bonus

Um no! From the talk we had with Vodacom, the voucher entitles kids from grade 4 to 12 to interact with an online tutor. From reading that, I can't see any mention of a tutor etc.

I'll check again when we meet up with Vodacom, to get a clear picture of the voucher.

If you want a major brand name you could go for the Moto E - R1825 it's dual core though which is not necessarily worse if its a good cpu and performace is good. It will surely have more firmware support now and in the near future, running the newest Android version. Also has 1980mAh battery which should give good battery life in this type of device.

I am looking for a new phone, but it must be under R2000.00. Nothing fancy.

The thing is it will be work phone so if it gets stolen or dropped I won't have a heart attack.

There are several well known brands you can get for R 2000.. Any of these brands are much better than those unknown chinese brands. Why not the get the newer model Acer, they are quite affordable. My friend has a bought a Acer phone last year and he doesn't any problems with it. Acer is new in the market, but they are trusted brand, famous brand for making PC hardware products from the same country as Asus, HTC etc.

Are you calling the number 3 brand in the world, an unknown Chinese brand? Huawei are fast becoming one of the most recognisable brands in the world in terms of handsets, to go with their solid list if modems etc.

Sales is not a benchmark for quality and reliability.

I for example got an iPhone, 2nd largest manufacturer in the world if I'm not mistaken and it's given me more problems than any other smartphone I have ever owned. I have bought a ZTE S551, it does its job... Rather poorly I might add, there are measuring reflective defects with the LED, I've got an alcatel one touch pixie 4007x, it's such junk I had to replace it within 2 weeks as the shop had such poor support for warrantys.

I've learnt my lesson, if it's too cheap to be a decent product, it probably is. And buying cheap is ALWAYS more expensive over the long run.

Though I wouldn't touch an Acer smartphone either. Computers, sure but smartphones, no. Too new, let them get at least 6-10 years experience in the LOCAL cellphone/smartphone market first, same with HUAWEI, Alcatel and ZTE.

HTC is also a little too "new" for me.
