Unifi APs Signal above them

Hi Hi.

Always wondered...

How is the Signal of the Unifi's above them, considering their normal mounting is ceiling.

I have a multi story house and some thick walls all over the place that kill signal.
Have a nice Cat 6a cable to the point where I want to install another AP.

Apart from the characteristics of the AP it will also depend on the ceiling material and construction. In the Unifi controller you can see some connection details including signal strength for clients connected on the upper floors or you could test with a wifi analyzer app on your phone.

I know I have one in my study fitted to the roof, and our MB is right above it and have just about no signal in there...
Between re-inforced concrete and being above it it does not seem to project a very strong signal upwards.

It’s going to be very circumstantial based on placement and materials.

In my one office with two floors and a concrete slab between them the upwards signal is actually an issue near the open spaces like stairs and such as often devices will hold onto signal from the downstairs AP when going upstairs and we need to fine tune those units to lower output to stop this from happening.

If you place them too close to windows this also tends to happen as the signal travels around the “outside” and not directly through the floor.

So with some effort and planning you could probably achieve this but at the same time rather just do the extra work and install another AP upstairs.

Not quite the same but in my study I have a UniFi AP mounted under my desk and out of sight and it’s not an issue at all, but granted it’s pretty much a same room placement so I don’t expect any issues no matter how it’s mounted.

They aren’t really all that directional and the design is mostly just for easy mounting. Even when you install them sideways against a wall they’ll happily still distribute signal to the room behind them.



What they are mounted to will be far more important and affected the ability to broadcast rather than the AP’s own output.

I have a single story house. But with thick walls. I mounted ours in about the middle of the house and it covers the house and garden pretty much 100%.

My office is a double story. I found it better to have another one or two. Did manage a few years with just one mounted on the top floor but had a dead spot here and there.

... I ended having to also change channels, seems everyone around me is flooding whatever er channel i was on when set to auto.
Having allot better stability now with the LR on channel 1 and the older 5 Pro on channel 6, or might be other way round.
Have allot of IoT all over the house and could see devices drop off and on.
Unif console is also crying about my AP Density...
As mentioned happen to have a Cat6a cable at the furthest end, garage, with a normal ceiling board so that entire section of the house should improve well.

thinking the 6Plus is going to be a good fit for whats needed and cost...
