Hello all,

First time poster here. I hope this is the right spot for this kind of question...

I recently applied to study towards Bsc. Computing (previously Bsc Computer Sciences). I have been out in the big world for 7 years and figured I'm financially stable enough to study. As excited as I was, I was recently sent a mail telling me I do not meet the "additional college" requirements (Math or English) to study this.

My English is 61% and Mathematical Literacy is 84%. When I did the course calculator on UNISA's website, the requirement for this was 20 points and I got 27.

This just doesn't make sense to me unless mathematical literacy does not count. I'm wondering if anyone who has gone trhough this before could share some light.

Thanks in advance :)

Pretty sure Mathematical Literacy will not count.

You could probably have to see if you could do a foundation course first.

I'm sure you need Mathematics, and not Maths Lit. Call them to confirm?

Besides that, unless you've been doing mathematics on your own in the mean time, doing computer science with only word sums and a bit of adding and telling the time you're going to struggle.

Yeah Maths & Math Lit at school level is not the same at all. You will have to do a bridging course.

Not to be harsh, but I don't think Maths Lit counts in life.

Maybe look for some sort of bridging course?

Yeah the kids today think its an easy ticket into University, unfortunately its not recognized by Universities.

Math lit is functional algebra and doesn't cover the mathematical concepts required for the degree. Best attend a bridging course that incorporates some Calculus. Best of luck with your endeavor.

MAT011 is the bridging course you need to do. Get your butt in gear and see if you can register for bridging courses still. Don't waste time with emails, go to the campus in person.

The grade 10 maths lit paper this year in private schools consisted of questions such as looking at a shopping center layout and answering things like "how many exits are there?". Looking at last years matric math lit paper it had layouts of a sub-sectioned farm and the paper asked "how many sections are there?".

Functional algebra is one thing but this is the type of **** I was being asked in grade 1. I would be too embarrassed to even admit I did math lit if I did; suppose I'm lucky I got to go to school before it turned into a massive joke.

I know this now, 7 years after I finished school. We were the first year who got to make that choice (higher grade and lower grade math was scrapped). I'm a programmer now and realize I should have done it. Now that I can afford to study, I am regretting my decision back in 2006 (Grade 10). All I can do is figure out a way to do a bridging course and then start my bsc.

I'm just pissed that I have to wait until the end of next year to apply again.

I'm 40 and just wrote my final UNISA exams. Its never too late to study, never. If you don't come right with starting your degree next year then look at Coursera and Edx. Helps you get into studying and I've done a couple of courses.

I'm a software developer as well.

If its programmung then maths is important.

Its not just cause some things im code require some serious maths (games are tje perfect example), but maths alsp teaches you how to do some good problem solving, which is requird in programming.

But ofc, thats just my own opinion.

Perfect example. ^^^^ Maths is more importanter than best gramma for developers.
