Universal cell phone charger

here we go again... Batteries that are going to last 20 times longer, cell chargers that will work with all phones, etc. etc.

They get announced every few years, but somehow we never actually see one.

Agreed. This was mentioned a few times already, but the thing is that the manufacturers makes profit on their chargers. That's the only thing that keeps it from coming in my opinion.

Hopfully this will happen. No more getting asked if I have a certain charger lying around somewhere.

"one-size-fits-all cell phone charger."

It's called a USB cable..

The sa 3pin is a little bulky but works really well. Why would you want to get rid of it?

So what's wrong with microUSB? I would have thought that's pretty damn Universal already... Don't all new phones use that anyways? (Except of course Apple with their "pay 500 bucks for a cable that works with our stupid proprietary ports"-ports)

Micro or mini? Most phones use mini, of which I have a cable for almost every pc. My Nokie 5800 use micro, which is one of the few things I don't like about the phone. I thnk any company who seriously want to make it easier for the customer would simply commit to make all their future phones chargeable via USB mini.

The power socket of my Nokia E72 broke. I'm now using the mini-USB socket for charging it either via a cable to my laptop, a universal car charger or my wife's Blackberry charger! THe connection is much more reliable that the Nokia connection.

Micro. That's what all the Androids use, and if I remember correctly all the Cackberries as well, haven't used one in a while. Mini is too big for some phones, it's the "older" standard.

Edit: Yup, Blackberries also use the MicroUSB. So do Windows 7 phones. It's pretty much standard.

I'm glad to see apple getting in on this initiative but equally surprised. They make money licensing their dock connector so I hope they're not going to make the usb port a dumb one only for charging.

Micro-USB is thinner and more robust (or was designed that way). It will be standard in phones, because it adds less thickness to the phone. Thinner phones needs micro-USB.

This is true. The UK 13 amp, hexagonal pin fusible plug is also pretty cool. They are both trashed by a really good idea from the winner of one of these science fair competitions. Unfortunately, I don’t recall the details (except I thought it was gobsmackingly good).

I stand corrected. Seems like I'll have to stock up on Micro cables then as well. :-P
