Universal cellphone charger pantomime

I always feel sorry for poor Apple users tripping over their proprietary connectors and cables for their laptops. No ways Apple will use some universal standard for their products. There's too much money in 50 dollar converter cables to interface to the rest of the world.

Nice article. Just this:

unlikely to tow the universal charger line

It's actually 'toe'. Sorry, pet peeve.

J

Definition of: Toe
Definition of: Tow

In all likelihood Apple will have multiple phones in the market in 2012 and Apple is not part of the GSMA, and unlikely to tow the universal charger line.

I don't see the problem? Unless I've completely missed something here.

Edit: Unless to "toe the line" is a metaphor based on placing one's toes on something like a running track line? Seriously - correct me if I'm wrong - I'd like to learn.
Edit II: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toe_the_line ;)

Regardless... It'd be incredibly convenient to have a universal charger - especially when going on holiday only to find you've left your charger behind and the other half's is incompatible :)

Micro USB is the way to go, it's simple, the connector is tiny and as far as I understand the voltage from a USB port is constant.

My N85 has a micro USB port which acts as the charger and for transfering data, it works very well and am glad that I can finally leave my charger at home, since I always have my notebook with me.

Best of all is, if the cable breaks then buy a new micro USB cable from almost any electronics store.
Also so many devices have USB such as PS3's some DVD player, most computers etc. so a charging point should be easy to locate :)

Well it really isn't that cellphone companies can't create a universal charger, its that they won't. They make too much money selling proprietary cables. Some cellphone companies like nokia sell a seperate cable capable of data tranfer and charging your phone via USB while they usually only supply a cable capable of data transfer when selling you the phone. Lets not forget that they will charge upward of R150 for this cable. What about chargers that sell for almost R200? And that's a R10 piece of technology right there.

Besides, it's not like the mobile manufacturers are being given a choice. The EU is threatening legislation to mandate chargers with a universal connection. So either they set a realistic timeline and get the job done or get threatened with fines and a tighter deadline if they don't comply.

Changing times

Some cellphone companies like nokia sell a seperate cable capable of data tranfer and charging your phone via USB...

Yes true, but maybe that is all in the past now, N85 the phone I purchased just got released in SA 3 weeks ago, it comes with a standard cable for charging and data transfer.
The cable they give is a standard cable, no odd connector for the phone end, which is new from Nokia.

Now that you can argue is a R10 charger provided you have a usb port.

Mind you, the universal charger may be too little too late by 2012 with companies touting wireless charger technologies capable of charging anything from your cellphone to your iPod.

PLease... A lot of the phones Ive had, had crappy chargers that started to have trouble charging...

Moto E398 - Had to sit there for 20 minutes with books and crap to get the angles right...

Moto SLVR - Actually used Mini-USB and worked the best...

SE K810i - Worse yet, has a really crappy connection device... Also have to play around for hours to get the thing going, worse thing is you cant charge the phone with the USB cable without putting off the phone :/

my last 6 phones have all charged via mini-usb.. mostly motorola and HTC variants...

I like the idea - USB gives 5V, and you just put a regulator in the phone to give 3.3 or 2.5 or 1.1 or whatever you need. The phone makers should be able to figure it out.

My problem is everything I have is geared towards MINI-USB: my GPS, Blackberry, Bluetooth headset & HTC. So I can use the original car-charger I got with my Garmin GPS. Now I'll get one phone with micro, and the whole idea will be lost...

:(
