Untangling the Ivy

One could almost hear the cries of elation ringing out last week when a judge ruled that Internet service providers and other communications companies could build their own networks. The significance of the verdict cannot be overstated.

most part of the time government needs a slap in the face and so does poison ivy

Er... Belinda?

There seemed to be no other explanation for this, than that the Minister had wrapped Icasa over the knuckles and forced it to tow the line.

I believe it's 'rapped over the knuckles' and 'toe the line'...

The verdict is a slap in the face for government and a victory for the industry and consumers. Matsepe-Casaburri can appeal the ruling, but that would be a mistake. It would paint the minister, whose bumbling and confusing policy statements led to the court case in the first place, as being firmly against the interests of consumers and voters. And any amendment to the Electronic Communications Act to prevent Vans from being given network licences isn’t likely to find much support in parliament.

Why did he have to go and say that. Now she is definately going to appeal the decision because it is in line with the strategy she has used during her time in office...

She cannot improve on her legacy, even if she tried.

Despite the Court victory for Altech which I fully support, Ivy managed to stop the liberalisation of the sector for 4 or more years using the 2004 date.

And overall Telkom has managed to be in Monopolistic Control of it's sector for 10 years so far.
One can question till we are blue in the face as to why Ivy and The DOC have behaved the way they have and kept the Industry from expanding the way it should and the only conclusion I come to is money. Money for the Shareholders in Telkom.

If Ivy appeals this ruling which she may just do it will delay the liberalisation of the VANS Operators for another 2 years, so let us not get our hopes up yet.

ANC croneyism keeps these inept and bungling crooks in office for as long as possible. There is no denying it... only enduring it.

Seriously, someone should shoot her if she appeals. Why must this be a "win for the consumer"? Why the hell are we fighting government? Aren't they supposed to be elected by the people for the people? Government is not supposed to be some big corporate company!

It would be "unfortunate" if Ivy Matsepe-Casaburri were to die while “studying the content” of the judgment.

But a year is a long time — plenty of time to inflict further damage. The minister could commit one last act of folly by appealing the court’s decision, sowing confusion in the industry for a few more years. Or she could even ask Icasa to impose prohibitively high licence fees on Vans wanting infrastructure licences under the Electronic Communications Act to deter them from becoming infrastructure providers.

Shhhhhh! Don't give her any ideas! Oh wait, there weren't any accompanying pictures so we should be safe for now. :p

It's about time there was some movement here.

But I agree with BTTB, the damage is already done. In this global ultra-competitive economy, the slow South African telecommunications sector development so greedily engineered by government will haunt us for many years.

The damage to the South African Economy is virtually immeasurable.
To draw a comparison that may be of similar measure and example - work out what you think Eskom or rather the Government has cost the taxpayer for not acting on Eskom's recommendation to build more Power Stations 10 years ago and we may be barking up the same tree.

What should be happening now is that The Minister should be sued in her personal capacity for acting outside the law and obstructing business from making a living.
Would be interesting to see at the end of that Court Case what said Minister owns in the way of assets - think Telkom Shares for one.

I cannot fathom why people who obviously aren't suitable for a job in Telecommunications continue to hold their position.

You're fired! (Donald Trump)
