Gears of War: E-Day

Ouch.png

At least it is coming to Steam... This trend is now well-established. Games priced in ZAR are more expensive than the USD. There will be exceptions, but this doesn't look to apply to newly announced games. I don't expect it to go back to the old days. Big budget games aren't within our budget.

Just the other day I saw a pricelist, related to hardware, and SA was the only country on this continent to be ordered among the EU. I guess games are going the same way.

OT, but concerning pricing updates. Paradox published this:

As we approach the end of the year, it’s time for our annual regional price adjustments. For those of you who are new to these updates: once a year, we review and adjust the prices of our games and DLCs in markets where currencies have moved away from our pricing benchmarks.

As a general rule, we aim to reflect changing market conditions by considering industry benchmarks and exchange-rate fluctuations. When price gaps between regions grow too large, the risk of regional price abuse increases. To mitigate this, we are bringing those prices back into alignment.

These changes will come into effect between 12-19th of January 2026. As always we want to give an early heads up before winter sales providing some time to plan purchases.

...

South African Rand (7- 21 % on average, depending on content)

Actually, it is more like 25%. I know, I am looking at the data right now. That is their explanation, another publisher that I asked, simply said, "tax reasons". On average, they are a good bit higher than 25%.

I'm not paying 1300 zar for that kak. I'll wait; esp. seeing it looks like it could be DEI-DAY.

All I know is, the AA/AAA entry to gaming is now $69.99, and I think GTA is going to add another $10 to set the new industry standard. Price aside, since well, it was always going to happen, it is the ZAR that concerns me. Looking at this,

and knowing that games on Epic is priced the same, only exchange rate conversions (plus some hard love tax) applies here now.

Even some indie publishers have us lined up against the wall with their new games. There are ample cases now where we are more expensive than Poland, and they haunt publishers to bring down their prices.

Either this is all strategic, to alter patterns, or we have some incredibly rich Steam users living here.

It hurts to see some older games being priced hiked. In some cases by +40%

Still a choice not to pay these prices. But people in general and fomo…

Price is dumb. At least MS prices Gamepass PC decently, R209pm for what is essentially the PC version of Ultimate.

For the cost of Forza and Gears on Steam right now you can rather get Gamepass PC for 12 months for those plus Halo and Plague Tale, with Stranger than Heaven, P4 Revival and Fable in the first half of next year.

Yes, it is a choice, but I am talking about digital game increases in broad terms. The ZAR is taking a pounding. There are games soon going on special that will be the same price on discount as it was once listed.

The ZAR is special in this regard since it has climbed into the top 10 most expensive game currencies.

MS Gaming's good guy campaign is not going to last. They are re-onboarding whilst working on a retention strategy. Game Pass remains a pool, and that pool can't accommodate everyone.

I don't do Game Pass, but who knows, perhaps their game 'ZAR' pricing is to sell Game Pass.

For now, Game Pass is a good deal. I'm not their target market.

This is like asking to have a tax revolt. There will always be users with dosh. We have rich people living here. Foreigners included. It is also known that our region is being exploited to buy regional discounted games.

Anyhow, this discussion needs its own thread, but that is destined to become derailed by the gaming sub gang. Been there with game preservation initiatives, and at least that is moving in a positive direction.

The only new games and DLC I am interested in are the new Total War Warhammer 3 DLC, Total War: 40K, Alien Isolation 2, and Hellraiser, and maybe the new Cronus. Everything else will have to wait in the bargain bin. I would have preordered DoW4, but they laughed at me being poor.

Warhammer 40k does look good; hopefully it works as well as it looks.

This game really caught my eye:

Not the usual type of game that I play...but it looks fresh and interesting and takes me back to my childhood growing up on these type of anime shows. Apparently an "adventure life sim".
