Hey guys.

Since the fall of Liberty LAN and Organised Chaos, the LAN scene has been a bit dark and lonely.
So I decided to make this thread for anyone to post info about LANs that are taking place in your area! Doesn't matter where you are in SA and it doesn't matter what platform. If you're going to have a LAN event, post about it here!

Here's a LAN that's taking place mostly in the Kempton Park area. Check it out and come join if you want/can. ;)

What happened to Organised Chaos? I have fond memories of my first OC back in 2006.

Online-only games and increased adsl speeds is killing Lans

LANs are pretty much dead because steam.

As for leachers, yeah you could get 2TB in a weekend... but 500GB/month through internet is much better.
Once you delete all the duplicates, rubbish, old stuff, half downloaded stuff, etc, then that 2TB is more like 1TB.
I'm much happier with 500GB of exactly what I need than 1TB of other people's stuff.

Plus your gear could get stolen easily - You need to be at your PC almost 24/7.
(My HAF-X case has two easily removable HDD bays in front, with two 4TB drives... can remove those and walk away literally in 10 seconds)

Depends :p

When LANs get as big as OC, you have issues of people getting drunk and out of control and things getting stolen.

I've been attending GAC for quite a while.
Never seen more than 100 people attending and mostly regulars.

I have left all my stuff there and gone out for hours and not a thing was touched.

At OC, I had my keys stolen and had to put up with drunk kiddies and strange looking people all the time

I used to go to Dazlan which on average had 120 ppl per lan, i was a regular and went 15 times, (not a single thing stolen ( 6 Hdd 1 ssd total of 16 tb storage; gtx 680, cyborg strike 7 keyboard 16 gb 2333mhz ram) so my stuff was quite valuable), and i left my stuff to go to KFC, went home to fetch stuff, fell asleep etc. So most of the time lans are pretty safe....Most gamers have a mutual respect for each others property :'D

I know, 90% of the time you should be okay.
Never had my own gear stolen either, just saying it is a possibility and a risk when going to a LAN event.
The idea of transporting all your PC equipment is also not something I would call fun.

They were cool a few years ago, no mistake about that - but today it's just not worth the effort, sleep deprivation and risk of theft, only to play a few games or to download month old stuff.
Faster internet, WUGs, and Steam has made LANs redundant imo.

Guess its a hipster thing now:D
Well I for one still enjoy LANs so im going to keep going to them
And its not really month old stuff up for downloading because like you said about better internet : everyone can now just easily download the latest stuff meaning they will be sharing the latest stuff. So for those people that dont have a 10mbps + line aka people like me :erm:, LANs are a great way for sharing:D
