Hi all!

About a year ago, we applied for a Telkom line, they sent out a tech and we were told that they can't install lines in our complex because it gets stolen too often. And then on Monday my mom got these messages. Our address and my mom's name is in the first message but not the second. I have never heard of people having to pay upfront for line installation.

Was just wondering if anyone has seen this kinda thing before?

What did telkom say when you contacted them?

The deposit is pretty standard for new clients these days, I'd hazard a guess that they won't proceed with installation if it isn't paid.

You need to pay the R700 else you won't get your line installed.

The amount is then credited to your account after the first month.

We also had to pay the R700 deposit when we ordered our ADSL line last month. We were told its a "holding deposit" payment, so if we cancel, we will get the money back or if we owe anything, it will come off from that deposit. We also had to make the deposit within 7 days otherwise the order would be cancelled.

Our line was on prepaid (for about 10 years), so we were treated as a new customer when they converted to postpaid.

Awesome thanks. Didn't wanna pay that money for a scam :p

So why did you not take a simple plan or a calling plan that comes with Free installation?

In our case, we took the simple plan, we already had the land line installed at our place, was just to activate the ADSL.

The account is on my moms name, so we just paid to have it activated.

Will also add my assurance that it's a legit charge. It will go into your account

I have no idea what my mom applied for. She doesn't remember either

Should have chatted to us before your mom placed the order... :p

I have applied online a few weeks ago and have not heard anything from anybody yet.

What would be cheapest option to get ADSL installed?

Have a look at the promotions, whether from Telkom or ISPs, where they offer free installation.

Applied for a cellphone 10 days ago. Except for the email saying that they received my order, I haven't heard anything either

I wasn't using mybb at that time :(

Telkom does a credit check to see if you qualify for free installation. It's not credit check per se but rather a check for defaults on your name. If you don't have any then applying for any of the Telkom simple deals or a calling plan will give you free installation.

I suggest going for a simple deal because the line and adsl part gets installed in one go where a calling plan only the line gets installed then after that when you apply for adsl there will be another delay....

The simple deal also come with a free router and a 3G dongle... No contract too. It's a all in one solution to get you up and running from scratch...

I have seen in another thread that Simple is no longer offered or if it is its now subject to a 24 month contract.
Verify this at a couple of Telkom Direct stores to be sure!

Sorry to say it, that screenshot of the banking details looks dodgy as hell. We don't refer to BAN numbers or Group numbers when making payments using the South African banking system.
