Upgrade advice on Vodacom

Hi I am looking for some advice around which new phone I should get, I am upgrading in the next few days and thinking of getting the Smart 120 package, I currently have a talk 120 with a data and sms bundle but with the new data prices the Smart 120 will be more value for money.

I currently have a Htc Magic, and have been fairly happy with it over the 2 years, only issue was that there was only one upgrade available over the whole period and it feels very dated compared to current android handsets.

I have already established that the HTC sensation and SGS II is a bit too expensive for me, I want to keep my costs below R500 pm, and therefore looking at the next tier of phones. And I don’t really want to spend a lot in a cash upfront deal, not more than R1000

The phones that I am considering now are the following

LG P920 Optimus 3D
Galaxy S+
Sony Ericsson XP Arc
Sony Ericsson Neo
Maybe Motorola Atrix (but it’s a little expensive)

Or something like that, (don’t think Iphone 4 is worth it, it’s also a bit dated by now)

I will mostly be using it for browsing, but it would be nice to have divx/some gaming, not really cared about capturing video. At the moment I am leaning towards the LG because it’s a new release and it has a decent spec sheet and the 3d thing could be quite cool.

Any help/suggestions will be greatly appreciated
 
Reviews of the LG Optimus 3D weren't that great, most say the 3d screen is more of a gimmick.
Galaxy S is a great phone, and the plus version gives it a nice performance boost. Great Screen as well.
Arc is just a beauty in my opinion! Very good reviews all round.
Atrix is an absolute beast, although availability of the device has been delayed month after month...

If you are into customs roms etc. then the Atrix and galaxy S are good choices (although you must check if the roms developed for the ordinary galaxy S will work on the plus or not).
If you are just going to use stock android etc, I would take the Arc.
 
Have you considered porting to red bull mobile? You can get the lg optimus black plus 200 min 100 sms's and 500MB data for R250.

That Red Bull mobile thing is really a bargain, but then I'll have to wait for my vodacom contract to expire, and hopefully they'll have more devices to choose from then. Thanks for the advice

Don't be so sure of that. The iPhone 4 is still a very capable device and fairly future proof, considering it'll be getting iOS5 soon. The stout Android supporter I am, I opted for the iPhone 4 a month ago when I had my one Talk 120 contract available for upgrade. I opted for the iPhone Talk 120 (essentially the same as the Smart Talk 120) and had no pay-in for the phone.

Then again, I probably would've taken a newer droid if I didn't have a Galaxy S already... :p Is there really such a huge pay-in for the SGS2 or HTC Sensation on the Smart Talk 120 packages?
 
Wow, that's quite steep! That's more or less what the pay-in is for the normal Talk 120 packages. Are you sure you have the rates for the SMART Talk 120?
