Upgrade advise

OK, gotten myself a 256GB SSD

To work with the extra 4GB ram would mean that I need to switch to 64bit. I haven't done that before, does 64 bit Win 8 support 32 bit applications if I can't get it in 64 bit, or how does that part work?

yes it does

You should go 64 bit windows, runs exactly like the 32 bit version, have yet to find a program that doesn't work. Advantages obviously much more ram and they say it is harder to infect a 64 bit computer but don't hold me to that. 4gb ram is ok but 8 or 12gb would be perfect along with your new beast hdd.

I bought mine electronically through Microsoft and I don't get the option when installing to do 64 bit

You downloaded Windows 8?

Then you should be able to phone them and just get a new version...

Hi There,
Glad you have done the upgrade. You will not regret having the SSD. I would also increase the ram and go to 64bit. I have also not found anything that doesnt run on it.

Regards

Tim

Let's be clear, he has the ssd, he is trying to get 64 bit OS meaning he knows about the ram so now let's see what we can do about his 64 bit issue.

Can you download windows via torrents or nzbs? Phone microsoft give them your code and ask if you can use it on a 64 bit version, if not. Download the windows 8 64 version and pirate it. In a sense you are not pirating. You bought the license it should cover both 64 bit and 32 bit.

If you need a version of a windows 8 you can pop around and collect it from me, let me check what windows i have.

Windows 8 Pro (x86-x64) there is also a crack if needed. It is 4gb and i don't have a reliable dvd rom drive, so bring a usb is your are interested or download it but first check if your license covers 64 bit. Randburg close to rhema business.

Thanks guys. After googling a bit I saw when I bought it the "Upgrade Advisor" software checks your current windows and then downloads the same one (in my case 32bit) As per FlatspinZA's post the license does cover both versions.

I started the trial 64bit download this morning from Microsoft's site which apparently will work to install and then run "Upgrade" from there with my key. Thereafter I can save the 64bit ISO for future use.

Hopefully I can do the install today still.

This coming week I will have to sort out the RAM part. I came across THIS - It is a bit cheaper than the rest. Will this work well with the rest of the components or should I get something else?

I really appreciate the help!
