Hi there people
Can anyone please assist me with the following. I purchased Starcraft, and then realized my Amd to slow. I wana upgrade to Pentium, the only thing I keep, is my Nvidia 9800GT graphics card.
Tell me what u please think of the following quatation......
Pentium i3 540 3.06ghz processor R1249
H55 LGA 1156 M/booard R799
Power supply (I keep my old box, just replace psupply)-550 watt R299
Memory-2gb ddr3 1333 R529
Total---R2876
I need to know if this will carry me for some time, you know pc's, here today, gone tomorrow?
I was opting for maybe the i5 or even i7, but the sales guy said the i3 is for my game the best.
I use windows 7 as operating.
Thanx million

Pentium i3 540 3.06ghz processor R1249 - rather a nice i5, i3 will choke up soon (next few years),

H55 LGA 1156 M/booard R799 - that will work

Power supply (I keep my old box, just replace psupply)-550 watt R299 - get a GOOD psu, I promise you, it will make sure your things won't die on you! Spend at least R500 of a psu. This might say 500 watts, but that's only for a very brief period of time, it'll probably only supply 350 watts stable (ish), and might even pass irregular current to your system, frying things

Memory-2gb ddr3 1333 R529 make this 4 gigs, 2 just isn't enough. I run XP, and with just COD running, and my background programs, I use 2 gigs... (I have 4 gigs in my pc, and thus far, it's been amazing...)

I promise you now, an i5 dual core will do the job 100%, but i would really advise you get a quad core, I made that decision last year, got a worse graphics card, but of late, I've been noticing programs making use of all 4 cores, and multitasking is a dream now... I have a crappy quad, and it still just plods along amazingly (seldom hit 100% cpu usage).

4 gigs of ram is a must! I promise you now, with Windows 7, it's almost ludicrous if you have less! (it's resource hungry)

The psu, please, if you want your pc to last a long time, get a GOOD POWER SUPPLY! If you spend money here, you can keep it, and use it in your next pc :)

So my suggestions :

CPU : Core i5-760 Core LGA1156 @ R 1,800 incl. (price from PC-international)

Your mobo will be fine.

PSU - http://www.digitaladdiction.co.za/gigabyte-odin-585w.html

RAM - Just get another module :p

this should work wonders :)

You got two options - AMD Phenom 955, or i5-750. That will decide what motherboard to get as well. Anything from Asus or MSI will be good. CPU = ±R1750, mobo = R±1250, maybe a bit less
Then 4gb DDR3 1333 RAM is a must. At the very least if your budget is tight but 2gb now and get the other 2gb next month (or whenever you have R500-600 again). 2gb = R500-600
PSU almost always ends up being debated. So let me tell you what I prefer - anything thats not an Odin or some unknown brand :p that said, your chances are still good that it will last you a good 3-5 years with the Odin. Otherwise I'll choose a Corsair (400W in your case) PSU anyday. Corsair PSU = ±750 iirc

well i3 will run the game, but I'd definitely consider getting an quad core, so i5 750/760 or like archer said the PII 955/965
4GB of ram is a must
Which ever setup you go, do get a decent mobo and psu.
Odin will serve your purpose for sure, but if want better quality you'll have to spend more. Those Corsairs are about R550 - R600

Now it's all good and well to tell you what you should get, but it would be better to know what sort of budget you have, so we know what you can get...

If you are budget limited then that will be a fine choice.

If you have the cash go for a quadcore without a doubt.

Hi guys.
Thank you very much for the advice, much appreciated really. My budget is between R3500-R4000
I wana to know if I will be at least able to play my Sniper, and Singularity without a hasle with the i5 or whatever one you said? At this stage my amd doesn't keep up with the game, keeps hanging, only 2 gig mem inside.
I just don't wana spent the money, and then someone comes around and say" that you bought is old technology, you should have bought............tra la la"
But thanx for the advice so far again

For budget gaming, a fast dual core and faster card will serve you better. A Core i3, 4gb RAM and a fast GFX card is an awesome setup.

What AMD do you have?

You might just be able to pop in a new cpu as AMD likes backwards compatibility.

Also you can get an AMD quad for the price of an Intel dual core.

Unfortunately your 9800gt is just as much of a bottleneck as your cpu most probably.

Cerebus: the 9800GT is more than good enough for Starcraft. With his current system the 9800GT is definitely not the bottleneck.

He never mentioned what is current system actually is. He might be able to pop a phenom2 quad core into his socket, buy another couple gigs of ram, and use the rest of his budget to upgrade his graphics.

@cerebus: Yup, thats true.

@lionking: could you tell us what system you currently have?

I would definitely spend more on a power supply. You'll really regret it if you bought a cheap one.

I ran the game on my P4 3.2GHz CPU, Leadtek Nvidia 9800GT 512MB, 3GB DDR667 ram at 1920x1080, all graphics set highest ( except cinematics set to SD ), game ran like a dream ( except for the one level where you must destroy the buildings before kerrigan gets to them).

What CPU u got?

EDIT: Also got a Gigabyte 750 watt PSU

AMD Machine

Hi guys.
Leka to see there are people out there who still helps, just leka
Okay, down to business. My setup is as follows----
AMD Athlon, Processor 3200, 2.01 GHZ
Memory; 2 gig
Win 7
SC: Nvidia 9800 Gt (THAT YOU KNOW)
p\supply I think 350 or 300 watts-to dark down there to make sure now

Thanx
Hakuna Mata

Hahaha no ways! Those athlons are old!! Like '03!! But nice to see it still running :) Loved my little 3000
Ya I'd really try get a quad core! It'll be a massive upgraded from what you have!

Eish, you'll see one hell of an improvement..

The only reason why I'm saying go for a quad is because more and more games are using thing, you can multitask very well too :). They a little more future proof basically. An i5 would be a good bet, largely because AMD's processors are going to be wasted soon (if AMD does release Bulldozer in an acceptable perioud of time)... i5/i7 will be around for a little bit longer...

Oh, nice thing about getting a quad core is that if you upgrade your graphics, you still won't get a bottleneck in future games, no matter how fast the dual core, if the games is made to run well on 4, you just won't have a comparison. Your brudget also allows for a nice quad and 4 gig ram (essential :p)

I think you will have issues with your old MB not being PCI-e. I think that old AMD would have been AGP and you can't even get AGP cards now.

EDIT: I reread your OP and I see that you are going to keep your 9800gt, just make sure that its not and AGP because then you will have to get a new one as well.

You didn't get an 9800GT in AGP. ;)

Sigh dude. Don't give out incorrect information. Bulldozer is backwards compatible to current boards and AM3+ boards will support current CPUs. AMD has way better upgrade path and have had so for a while now.

And yes they didnt make a 9800 in AGP.

My advice is to keep the card and get new cpu, board and power supply.

That and the fact that Intels LGA1156 is already on the way out (replaced by Sandy Bridge) and i7 is in limbo iirc, might be replaced as well next year. But why let facts get in the way of fanboism?
