When I inquired about a premature upgrade, I was recently told that my previous handset fee would have to be added on top of the new contract fee for the remainder of the initial contract period?!

Since when is this the case?

In the ten years that I have had contracts with the Big Three providers I have never had to "SETTLE" a previous handset...

Is it just me or has Vodacom just found another way to milk the public for funds?

I am seriously not impressed.

That's because cellphone contracts changed a few years ago, where you are actually only paying R99 for the contract and whatever else for the handset. Look at your bill you will see it say contract = R200 or whatever device fee = R200. You've signed the contract to pay off the device for 24 months not the contract. So you will have two months of extra payments on the previous device.
Also technically you are no longer "upgrading" you just taking out another device month to month.

Thanks for the info.

Still sounds really *****ty to me though.

Talking about upgrades , I have a Vodacom upgrade due on 1 November. Can you upgrade a phone contract to a tablet contract?

Probably not, but cancel the phone one when it is done and take out a data one.

Easier to explain it is when you take the contract for 24months, they divide the cost of the handset by the months of the contract. So when you upgrade "prematurely" you still need to pay off the handset.

If your spend is over a certain amount they will let you upgrade early without penalties.
