Hey all

I am due for my contract upgrade and have been looking at the following phones:

N95 8Gb
N82
N96 (apparantly available next month)

Which is the best one to pick? Main features i'm keen on is the multimedia and GPS capabilites. Also do any of them have free navigation? I find it pretty hard to swallow paying an extra R900 for navigation on these premium phones when the 6110 Navigator has it free!

Have also heard the N95 8Gb is problematic....any truth to this!

Thanks in advance

In my experience and from all the friends and clients who have gotten any of the N series phones, they are notoriously shoddy quality and tend to give alot of problems. They're also big and bulky with an identity crisis.

If I could make a suggestion... If you want a cell phone, buy a cell phone! :p

These devices that try and be everything in one mostly end up failing at most of their attempts at GPS/Multimedia/Bla bla, and end up being terrible for their intended core functions, being that of a CELL PHONE. You end up with a device that's got terrible battery life, has a GPS that you never use seeing as it's not very good, and being bulky and clumsy to use at that. Add to that the fact that you'll be lugging around a device with alot that can go wrong day in and out and the terrible support you get from Nokia, you're in for a long frustrating ordeal. Just hang out at Nokia Vodaworld for a few hours and you'll have your proof (Althouhg these days they don't really do customer faults anymore).

If you require a GPS, they're quite affordable these days, and I can assure you a garmin or tomtom works alot better than a nokia.

Personally, if I were going to purchase a nokia, it would probably be one of the business range phones (60 series or E series) without all the other BS features.

Just my 2c ;)

Concur. But I think tomtom is history in this country now. Some disagreement or other. E90 works well with Garmin but the battery runs flat faster than a glass of coke.

I'll go along with this statement yes. I've tried Garmin xt on my N95 and it's pretty useless compared to my Garmin Nuvi 310. There's really no comparison but it's pretty impressive what phones can do these days. I rate the N95 very highly, excellent, excellent phone and I know a lot of people who are very happy with theirs so you cannot go wrong with the N95 8GB but 1st prize would be the upcoming N96...

i totally disagree about nokias sucking - they have awesome features - except their chargers ...wait for the n96 if you can afford it!!

I seriously must live in a parallel universe to some of you guys... or perhaps purely because of my positive outlook on life things just go well for me!

Everyone bitches about Nashua... I have had no problems with them.

Everyone bitches about the holding times for Telkom call centre... I phone and get a password in less than 5 minutes.

A helluva lot of people have a problem with the N95 (although admittedly they never seem to own the phone themselves but have always heard of someone who knows someone who heard of someone who had a problem with them).... I have had mine for a year now. My job involves me being on the road and I use the GPS almost every second day to find clients and am yet to have a problem! I am often in a rush and only start my Garmin XT once the car is moving and still I get satellite signal within 30 secs at most! It is always done once I have entered the address I am after! The directions have been spot on in all but one cases where a road had recently been turned into a one way. Voice prompts are clear and accurate.

As for the other "BS" add ons, I often get comments on Facebook asking me what camera I use as the photos are so good. These too are taken with my trusty N95....

Mates at work are impressed when asking about weather forecasts and I quickly open Handy Weather and give them a five day forecast with wind and rain predictions...

Conversations to my brother in Australia using Skype when away from my computer, no problem, just open Fring, connect and chat away....

And you know what... it is brilliant at making calls too! Too lazy to search for a number... well press one button, say the chosen contacts name and the N95 dials away (but that was just showing off!). The actual call and reception quality is great. I live in a block of flats... I have taken a call on the ground floor and I am still holding the conversation when the lift doors open on the 13th floor! Most friends phones lose reception as soon as the doors close.

Speaker volume and mic pick up when using the built in hands free in the car is exceptional too... my old Samsung I used to have to hold to my mouth when hands free to have a conversation... the N95 lies on my lap!

Anyway as I stated when I started this.... I must just be lucky!!!

I'm too poor to own a N95 Lancelot, but one of my family members have one ;) It's a great phone, I completely agree.

I just checked out the N96 on GSM... does look hot too and if it builds on what the N95 started it can only be a winner... 16Gb built in and up to 8Gb card...
DAMN!! More than my old desktop PC!

Awesome thanks for all the input guys! Will probably wait for the N96 then!

I'm starting to think that myself!! :D

At risk of totally derailing this thread, but happy in the knowledge that the OP has his answer, isn't that the premise of "the Secret"? Maybe they are on to something! :)
Yeah I believe it is although I haven't read the book my wife has and when ever I start to spew negativity she tells me to reconsider...
