Upgrade RAM at Dion Wired for cheap

Just purchased a mac mini at dion wired for R5999. The guy offered to upgrade ram to 2gb for R399 in store while I wait and I keep warranty. Unfortunately no stock of ram. They also do Macbook Ram. Much cheaper than official Apple Ram.
 
But it remains the exact same generic ram that you would pay half the price for in pc terms. In fact you can upgrade your ram using many of the ram avalible for pc.

Can you? I own a Mac Pro and those need specially designed heat sinks
or your temp regulation goes off and your Mac Pro's fans kick
in making your silent machine as loud as a jumbo-jet. PC RAM DIMMS
don't have these heatsinks. However even Apple spec'ed 3rd party
Mac Pro RAM is cheaper than stock Apple RAM.

If the non-Mac Pro RAM doesn't need any special heat sinks, then
buying ordinary Hynix or Kingston is a wise choice.

For most - if not all - models you can upgrade the ram yourself without voiding the warranty. :)

I would like to know this as well, I could save a lot by buying standard ram rather than apple certified.

Edit:
Found out it is possible, just compare the timings, pin, speed with apple certified versions and if they are the same it's guaranteed to work.

Yeah it's similar to the memory we sell. It's either Patriot, Samsung, Hynix or Kingston. These are the ONLY memory types that Apple allows us to sell that is 3rd party and is Apple Authorized to use. We have similar prices as well.

The only difference with the Apple memory is that the Quality checks they use compared to other "mass memory" manufacturers is quite intense. I don't think I've
ever seen a faulty AMM (Apple Memory Module)

Occasionally we see some faulty third party memory but in the end most of them carry a lifetime warranty so there is little or no worries there.

From what our benchmarks have concluded the AMM and generic memory run almost identical in performance, especially with the Mac Pro's FB ECC memory.
 
Well actually your machine performs better with 2 chips in it. Especially the intel GMA onboard graphics, it utilizes dual channel memory. Thus why Apple don't factory fit one module.

It would be great if Apple actually provided a decent program to test
RAM. TechTools Pro, the advanced version of the app you get with AppleCare
is sloppy for testing RAM while the Hardware Test is just bull and doesn't
pick up any errors. At the end I had to use a 3rd party freeware solution
to test my RAM, Rember.
 
Reason I posted this is mainly for imac or mac mini users. Google replacing mac mini ram and you'll see that its not an easy process and voids your warranty. Dion Wired do it in store while you wait and your warranty remains intact.

Yep thanks for the heads up, but for my macbook it's really easy and won't void my warranty. :)

Err, no, inserting RAM into any Mac does not void your warranty.
You obviously void your warranty if you plow up your logic board while doing it.
 
Yeah installing your own memory will NOT void your Apple Warranty.

Only if there is physical damage or the "warranty void when removed" stickers are removed, but they are a bit deeper in the machine than the memory.

I would obviously however suggest you get a proper Apple Centre to install the memory as things we do are run an ASD (Apple Service Diagnostic) on the memory to make sure there are no memory errors.

Believe it or not but faulty memory can actually corrupt the OS.
 
I bought 4 GB for my Macbook in January for R700, Apple's prices for extras like that are just plain stupid.

Hey there's nothing wrong with a Mac Mini, it's basically a laptop inside (the components) just without the screen, kb & mouse. I think it's a great way to get into the Mac world!
 
I see the Mac Mini as the perfect Admin machine, by this I mean it's perfect for Web Browsing, Email, playing with iLife (Photo's, Movies and Music) and doing those Documents. In regards to the more professional work such as Photoshop and Final Cut I would strongly advise against it.

The Mac Mini still uses the GMA 950 Chipset and lacks somewhat on the Graphics Front.
