So it's finally time to upgrade from my P5N-D and Q9400

I've opted for an Intel i5-4690k and a Gigabyte H97 Gaming 3, however I don't know which RAM to choose, for gaming is there any difference between value ram (like the Corsair ValueSelect, 8GB, DDR3-1600) over gaming RAM like the Kingston HyperX Fury, 8GB, DDR3-1600.

Reason I ask, is because for all these years using my P5N-D, I've been using "value" Samsung DDR2 800 RAM, and there were no discernible issues?

The memory wont make your pc go any faster.

I personally use generic ram 1600mhz.

Are you you going to be overclocking? otherwise I would suggest go for I7 4790 NONE K going for around R3100 from JA trading .

Thanks, for the input, no I don't overclock, it motherboard and processor are a bundle from RebelTech.

Edit: do you perhaps have a link to JA trading?

i used 1866 and 1333 ram not a big diffrance

just get 16gb 1600 its the sweet spot

and jatradeing is legit :) is not one of those scammers

If you're going for a gaming PC rather stick with the i5. There very little benifit from the i7 vs i5 for gaming. But I agree, if you're not overclocking get the non K i5 version.

I5 just seems sluggish in new games.

My i5 4570 4th gen at 3.6ghz used 80%-90% cpu usage on BF hardline ,dropped to 50% now that I am using a 3770k. (total cpu usage in task manager for the whole pc)

I prefer not to run my cpu near the 100% when gaming ,want it to have some breathing room also.

Then the game cannot deal with all cores and therefore the usage is lower. There is not that much of a performance gain between them.

Get the cheapest 2x4GB sticks of ddr3-1600.

If you are not going to OC the don't waste money on a K series CPU & MB that supports OCing. Rather get the i5-4690 & a cheaper MB, take the savings and pump it into a better GPU as that's going to make the biggest difference.

You can pick up a tray i7-4790 on carbonite for R2.6k (there's also one going for R2.2k but probably sold already) I think which would be an even better option!

It's the game that's at fault here.

somegames use cpu poorly, dying light is one of them

other than that it runs great :)

*goes and kill some zombies*

i upgraded from a i5 2400 to a 3770 and it does play bit better,i max it out now and no sluttering
where with the i5 on max i had lower fps and a slutter (slowdown) at some points

so i am happy with my switch to a i7 :)
even tho its not a "K" it can go over 4.0ghz and im happy with that

Would prefer to buy the components new, so Carb is out, for now, also keeping my Gigabyte GTX 770.

In conclusion I'll look at a cheaper mobo + ram, with and i7 (non k version)

The carb components are new tray cpu's with warranty. Cpu's never die anyway. Look for user PotterH sales.

Thanks for the heads up, will take a look now. - Edit I see he says his CPU's are sold out :(

So far I've looked at the following:
> i7 4790 LGA1150
> Gigabyte P85-D3 ATX board (personal preference, don't like m-ATX boards)
> Corsair RAM mentioned in first post (x2)

Keep an eye on his posts, he has new stock all the time. Or PM him and ask when he's getting in new stock.
