Upgrade time - what to choose!!???

Hey if you can pay R400+ for a R70 MyChoice100 contract just so you can have a S5 then you should not bitch about high cell call rates, no? I prefer to buy whatever handset I fancy cash and save on the monthly contract and have more Randelas in my pocket every month, and have the benifit of moving between providers whenever I please since there is not claw-back for cancelling.

I challenge you to find me somewhere that I can use my own device and get 100 minutes call time, 300MB data and 100 SMS for R69.20 per month.

I'd also be interested in chatting about the inconvenience in trying to port the same number each time you change service providers. My number is my business, I need to keep it so I'd need to port each time. Even if it is only slightly inconvenient it is more effort than just sticking with one SP.

Take the contract without a handset, wait for the S5 launch hype to die down in 3 months or so, find it on special. I got my S2 like that back in the day for 40% less than MTN wanted for it over 20 months.

Some people can't wait, hence me saying they can do as they please..

Nope, sorry, as hard as you are trying your options are still not going to work out more favourable. The MyChoice100 on the "use your own" option will cost you R129pm and you only get 100MB data, not the 300MB on the S5 deal. And that is tying in to a 24 month contract anyway, not sure what they charge if you want a shorter term.

The S5 would need to drop in price by around R1,440 before you'd break even with just taking the S5 on the contract to start with. And by then you'd be eyeing out the Note 4 or another new phone...

Yeah, but people need airtime anyway. So might as well ake the contract. You get much more that way for the extra R90 you pay. Will probably have to double that for the same benefits on prepaid.

OP said he has two contracts :)

I know. Which is why I'm wondering why everyone is saying he must get the phone NOT on contract.

Maybe cancel the contract - if its only there for the new phone and not needed. If it makes sense to pay the contract, go for it but looking at the MTN deals, if you don't need the contract, save yourself the R90 p/m and go through FNB. If you aren't with FNB, the contract is possibly your best option (unless of course it is significantly cheaper on prepaid or OP doesn't want to put down that amount of cash and would rather 'finance' it)

I got my Z1 for about 6k cash when it originally came out, took out a Telkom Mobile Smartplan 100 with an S3 mini for 169 a month and gave it to my friend for free. Getting 100 min and 5gb a month and I'm happy with that. Find me a direct offer that compares, please?

Good deal!! 6k where?

:D Cousin in UK works at Sony, got it at company price and brought it along when he came down in December. Was 7k with the magnetic charger, car holder, case etc included.

Well unfortunately I don't think OP has those sort of connections;):D

1st choice: HTC M8 - something about the dual cam does it for me

My m7 feels great, runs great and takes great pictures if i dont zoom)
The zoe feature, and 30sec preview of the day is an awesome way to recap on the day. If its an upgrade of the M7 then this seals the deal for me.

2nd choice: Z2, amazing specs, and I never had any problem with Sony products before.

last choice: Any Samsung - the flimsy plastic back cover really puts me off i dont know why. Wouldnt pay that much cash for something that feels shytey.

Ha ha, well that is a little like saying I mugged someone and got the S5 for free so find me a contract that can match that. We are talking the usual avenues here. If you can get a phone from elsewhere at a ridiculous price then obviously you are going to battle to find a contract that matches.

However, even in your case I'd be interested in knowing what the Z1 purchase price was here at launch? I found an old thread on here that referred to the following:

I know you can get the Xperia Z through Orange for R6,900 which includes customs etc.

Although a later calculation shows shipping it in, all inclusive, would have cost R7,655.

For the sake of comparison, for the S5 we have the following:

Orange South Africa has pre-orders open for the black, blue, gold, and white models of the device at R9,815.

I made a grave mistake today... I went into MTN to ask about the S5 and any pre-order lists they may have. While waiting I played with a real Nokia Lumia... it almost had me second guessing my decision so I had to quickly put it down. Just to make sure I picked up a Note 3 straight after and couldn't help feeling that it was just more of the same that I already have and just didn't seem to have that smoothness of the Lumia.

Damn me for picking up that Lumia!

Which Lumia??:wtf:

I deliberately did not mention the device as the buggers did not have any "labels" next to the phones. It was not big enough to be the 1520, it was not the 1020 so I'm assuming it was the 925.

Hi everyone, Im the OP....just new account. Anyway, thanks for all the input from everyone. I have made up my mind and Im getting the device tomorrow. But before I say which device......

Honestly with all the choices available nowadays such as S5, Z2, HTC One m8 etc you cant really go wrong with any of these. They are all awesome devices!!

After playing around with a few Lumnias, I removed Nokia from my options list solely because I just dont like the windows OS. I decided to stick to the 3 big players....s5, z2 and m8. As much as I like the m8, not knowing exactly when it will be available and poor local support etc, the m8 was also eliminated. This left me with z2 and s5. After hearing from Sony SA that the z2 will only be available from June I also ditched it as I dont want to wait that long.

I went to the vodashop a few times and played around with the s5 on display. Overall a very nice device!! Just a few things that really bothered me....

1) On that specific 16gb model only 4.9gb storage was available!! :wtf: and there were very little to none photos/videos/music on the phone. Dont know the retail version is perhaps different....

2) After about 10minutes of playing with the device it got extremely hot. My Z doesnt even get that hot when browsing for long periods of time with LTE enabled.

3) Heart rate monitor is total crap. Took about 4 tries to get it right initially and then did it 5 times with each time giving me completely different results....impossible that it can be 80 b/pm and then few seconds later 180 b/pm lol

4) UI was somewhat sluggish and not always very fluid

All those aside, it is still a cool device and I actually like the perforated fake leather back :) feels good in the hand.

Eventually decided to ditch going for the s5 also. I then came to the conclusion that my current Z actually still serves me pretty well (even with its flaws) and I dont really want to replace it just yet. Now I just want something fun and new that I can use with my phone and tablet. Enter the phablet!!! Thought I might give the phablet niche a try and see how I like it.

Phablets are between Note 3 and Z ultra. After extensively reading some reviews and watching youtube videos and playing with shop devices, I made my decision. And to top things, when I went to the store to order it, there was already one in stock with loads of goodies inlcuded in the box :D

The Sony Z Ultra :p

ps. sorry for long post
