I currently have the SD single view decoder on the compact package (only use it for soccer and other sport events) and am wanting to purchase the DStv DSD4136(4U) HD Decoder so watch sport in HD.

My question is, is it just a straight swap when I purchase the new one? I don't need any extra cabling (besides the HDMI cable) to get it to work? I live in a complex if that makes any difference.

Please could someone let me know before I purchase it. As far as I can tell, it would just be a straight swap and then I will be able to view the HD channels that are on my DSTV package correct?

yes straight swap, then call MC and tell them that you have just bought the decoder so the new Smart Card can be linked to your account. Also keep in mind approx R70 extra monthly fee. well thats what i pay now since i upgraded. but i have the PVR

As Adam has said straight swap. But you do have to call MC to get your new smart card paired with your new device. If you are a dstv premium subscriber no extra fees.

Perfect thanks. I won't be using the PVR function so there shouldn't be any extra charges correct other than the monthly R295 I pay for the Compact package?

Why is it that all of sudden, three of my friends, have orange lights appearing on thier old silver single view decoders? There was nothing wrong with them the previous evening, no weather, no electricity spike etc.

Is DSTV switching these units off remotely, on purpose, as to force you to buy the "new Tech" decoders?

On contacting thier technical support- the following were just some of the reasons: Weather, incorrect installation, faulty LNB etc.. i mean there was nothing wrong with the unit a few hours ago.

PS- Centurion, Monument Park Area in PTA.

Also, Makro and Game advertises the new HD Decoder (no installation) over the past weekend on special at R499-but no stock!!! The MAkro salesman in Centurion even called it a "mistake", wanted me to buy the R799 unit which includes the installation voucher!!

Zenmeister,

yes, normally that is the case, agreed. However this time they all display "no signal" and does not respond to signals from the remote.

As i mentioned, not even DSTV TEch Support could establish what is wrong.

Before this thread gets taken over, could someone confirm that there would be no additional cost if I just want to switch the decoders to be able to watch S3 HD?

There will be no additional cost. You have to call them to activate the HD channels though, they will still be SD versions by default.

AFAIK you have to pay for PVR functionality to watch HD channels. I could be wrong though.

no
HD is free, PVR has an access fee
the new HD decoder does not have the PVR functionality

Yeah DSTV removed all simulcast channels that had SD and HD and now only have HD channels so if you on a subscription that has the HD channels and a HD Decoder, you will automatically get the HD channel at no extra cost - well thats how I understand it.

So my new DSTV DSD4136 arrived Friday afternoon. Set it up and called Multichoice to activate new smartcard. Everything worked except for the HD channels. 15 minutes later the person I was talking to realized she hadn't activated the HD channels yet (after me telling her a few times to check that). Long story short, now am able to watch Football in HD!

Your resident DSTV noob here :p... how does a PVR fit into the picture with the new DSD4136(4U) HD decoder? Does a HD PVR make the HD decoder you purchased obsolete? I just got two DSD4136(4U) HD Decoders delivered this morning...
