Upgrading from 384 to 4mb.

Just spoke to Telkom now and already the confusion starts.

They confirmed that my line is suitable for 4mb.
She also confirmed that we can do the upgrade now, but it will take 5 days before the upgrade is done.

I then asked her if I will be billed for DO 2 and for DO 3 if I upgrade now and she confirmed that I will not be charged for DO 3 until July because the upgrade takes 5 days. But she also could not assure me that I will not be charged for DO 2 for July.

I will rather visit the Telkom Direct store in Menlyn after work. Maybe the will tell me something completely different.

Maybe she meant upto 5 working days, even though it might be possible to do it immediately. They tell you that just in case they are not able to do it immediately incase of any problems.

Yes. That is what she meant, but I also asked what the quickest would be and she said not quicker than 3 days.

Anyway, just got home from the Telkom Direct store and was promised it would be done tomorrow before 11am.

3-5 days vs 16 hours

They always say up to 5 days, but it is almost always done instantly. Trust me.

That's how lovely our dear Telkom is. You can always be sure to find 3 different answers/explanations from 3 different people.

At least the Telkom Direct in Menlyn has somewhat competent people and I have always found them to give me the best answer/solution to my problem.

heh, choose from a,b,c- your answer :D

I was also going to upgrade but I was told my area didnt support 4M line. Another myBB user provided me with some info to check max possible line speeds.

dont activate your new line today, I was just told by 2 different telkom ppls that you must just cancel the old service today before 17:30, then phone in on 1 July and activate the new service, or you will be billed and lose your BW caps as it is still June.

What I did was upgrade the line to 4mb (just the line) yesterday afternoon and I will then go in to the Telkom store tonight at 17h00 and convert my DO 2 BW to DO 3 BW.
She showed me on the screen that I will be charged pro-rata for the 4mb line for June - 2 days.
I just need to go in again for the BW. Luckily they are right next to our offices. 5 minutes in and out.

Quickly went home at lunch time to see if the upgrade has been done.
 All my articles in alt.binz was downloaded. 5Gb in about 3 hours.
Average speed was about 396KB/s.
Now that is what I call broadband.... (if you compare it to the 384 i had)

Anyone know what the number is to call to upgrade an existing ADSL line to 4MB? We're trying the same thing, and after calling 4 different numbers, I'm now tired. :(

10215 - Account enquiries, thought I'd start here. Said I should use option one for new services. They told me to phone...

0800 375 375 - obscure options about new services, promotions, etc. No option to upgrade line, so I chose option 1. They told me to phone....

10219 - Almost got it right, but then she wanted to know if my "package" needed to be upgraded. I said, "No I need to upgrade the speed of the line". Ok, so then you must phone....

0800 500 200 - Who said "No, this is completely the wrong place. This is for new accounts only". Phone 0800 375 357.

So I would phone 0800 375 375 *again*, except that if they tell me to phone someone else, I"m going to
A) Swear at them
B) Break my phone
C) Swear at them some more.

Ok... I'm feeling better now.... Any advice? :)

10219 if you are upgrading from 384 or 512 to 4mb.

0800 375 375 if you already have a up to 4mb line and just need to increase speed if your line is sync'ing at a lower speed.

if you upgrading from 384 I think you need to choose the new services option.

Also try 10217 - Business dept.

They always answer the phones quicker than the residential dept.

Easiest would be to run into a Telkom Direct store.

Thanks so much, phoned again just now, went straight through to an operator and finalised the order.

Must've just used the wrong wording when I said I wanted to upgrade the "speed" of my line :)

Let me know if I should start a new thread for this?

Our line was upgraded by the time we got home last night (yay!). However around 8pm or so our router started disconnecting every 5-10 minutes. It would automatically reconnect after a few seconds, but it meant online gaming wasn't fun.

I looked at the router stats and from memory I remember download attenuation was 44 and download noise (margin?) was 4db.

So reading the forums I now know the 4db is a problem, is there anyway to improve this on my side? I only have 1 phone plugged in with a filter, I'll experiment tonight unplugging it to see if that helps.

I have a netgear wireless router (not sure what model).

Will post full stats and router model and firmware version tonight.

Edited to say early this morning the router was working perfectly, hopefully it isn't just the sheer busyness of the line causing this :( We live in a busy suburb, probably lots of people with adsl lines downloading like mad. We also have a semi-shaped line.

ya same thing happened to me, ordered yesterday at 17:15, by the time I got home at 19:00, it was syncing at 4MB, but this morning everything is broken, nothing happening on the line.....had to log a fault, but last night I was flying ....boohoo

No, he's saying that:
From 384 to 512, it's an incredible R180 increase in price.
From 512 to 1024 it's only an R80 increase in price.

0384 = R152 = FAST
0512 = R326 = FASTER
1024 = R413 = FASTEST

R326 - R152 = R174
R413 - R326 = R87

Cool?

The 384 package is designed to hook you.
The 512 package is warped because it's suitable for singular VOIP with it's much higher upload speed.
The 1024/4096 package is probably subsidised by excessive bandwidth consumption fee's.
