After much debate, me and my GF decided to upgrade our 384 line to a 4mb.

Who has done this before and how did you go about doing it?

Although I have not confirmed with Telkom, I am 90% sure my exchange supports 4mb.

What is the fastest way to get Telkom to upgrade the line?
Will this also take 3 weeks like my initial installation or is it as easy as flipping a switch at the exchange?

Should I apply now or wait till the 1st of July before upgrading? I don't want to be billed for 4mb in June when I haven't used it.

Any other tips or advice?

Thanks

call em now. Takes less than an hour.

Okay, but how will this affect my Billing?

By how much are you going to increase your cap?

I would rather have a higher cap at lower speeds...

I already do about 40GB/month. Will just add another 30GB WA Local account.

I need the speed right now.
I would rather download something quicker and know I can switch of my laptop when finished, than keep it running through the day to finish a download.
And the 5 minutes it takes to buffer a Youtube/Zoopy video is annoying her.

Ahh- well, you got the government to agree;) Nice.

I reckon it's cheaper to leave my PC on downloading slowly than it is to buy a faster line...

I think I should swap it for an old laptop though. Hmm

Upgraded from 384 to 4MB 2 years ago and it took aout an hour, I did have connectivity issues down the line for a period of 3 weeks but I belive that was cause of the rains.

Believe it or not but it was her idea from the start.

I agree in the long run it would be cheaper for a slower line but I can not take the risk of frying MB's on the laptops.
If I had the space around the house I would buy a standard/cheap PC and let it run 24/7, but that is not going to happen. The "government" is fully against that idea.;)

I am privileged to have an extremely stable line. Not even one disconnect in the last 7 months.
When did you do the upgrade? 1st of the new month?

It does not cost anything to upgrade (downgrading costs). It is now an automated process once you call them. It should work instantly, but they perform some sync tests to see if your line can support the speed.

the charges are pro-rated. so you'll only be charged for the days you use and not the full month. So apply for an upgrade now, instead of waiting even though its just one more day.

I was on 384 and applied for an upgrade last year october. I was told the exchange doesn't support it and they'll let me know when the upgrade has been completed.

Then in January my line was suddenly upgraded.

Pro-rata line charges. Okay thanks. That makes sense.

I should have mentioned that I am on DoBroadband 2. Thats why I am concerned about the billing. I want to upgrade to DO 3, but as far as I know they do not give you pro-rata data if you apply now. As I understand it I will be charged for the full 3GB data for June.

And I want to do the upgrade in such a manner that I do not get charged for DO 2 in July. Only for DO 3 and have the faster line from 1 July.

not the case anymore. i downgraded last year and they charged me nothing for it. i have yet to see if you are allowed to see-saw (one month on, two months off, etc)

I think you guys might be mistaken. Upgrading does not cost anything. All they do is change a setting on your line. The only thing that costs more is your monthly rental.

What are your current monthly costs and what do you estimate they will increase to?

My billing cycle doesnt start on the 1st, I just upgraded it, you'll only pay extra on your next bill.

Currently about R600/month
DOBroadband 2 - R258.00
Line Rental - R125.00
WA 30Gb Local Only - R130.00
Prepaid 1Gb - R60-R100(Depends on monthly usage)

Looking at about R800-R950 with 4mb line.

Thanks. Will run into the Menlyn Telkom Direct store first thing Wednesday morning and do the upgrade.
My line has been extremely stable so I doubt(touchwood) there will be any problems with the line when switching.

Upgrading is easy peasy, downgrading is another story regarding paperwork an such bs iirc.

I did an upgrade this month - also from the 384. It took them a bit longer than an hour though - but at least it was done within a day!

They said my area showed a green light for a 512kb connection...I said I wanted at least 1024 otherwise I wasn't interested. They said they would check but the next day I had it connecting at 3.2mbps.
