Ok the ps3 only reads fat32 and the harddrive is a ntfs.I need to change the file system from ntfs to fats without losing data.Should i use partition magic for this or some other open source software.I will be installing ubuntu on it and xp(emulation via ubuntu) on the ps3.Will this be a problem.
Is it possible to change the file system and have no error.

:erm::rolleyes:

How much data is on the HDD in terms of % used? I don't think it is possible to convert to FAT32 directly; so the program needs space to copy your files temporally while the conversion is happening. But partition magic should work....

A couple of years ago I tried to do this (with Partition Magic) and it wasn't possible maybe things have changed.

FAT32 -> NTFS (Possible)
NTFS -> FAT32 (Not possible)

Surely a backup/reformat solution will be.
  • Faster.
  • Safer.

Yeah, perhaps the disk was full. With mine I had to: create a 10gig partition from unused space > format FAT32 > Move data > repeat x 30. If the disk was less than 50% full the program would have done it for me automatically....

The hdd has about 50% free space,i still have to partition the drive for ubuntu....i think 10 gig will suffice:D
To be honest i took the drive out of laptop and will be transporting it to the ps3.

Acronis Disk Director can do this - not freeware though.
Did this a few years back when I formatted my XP drive as Fat32 instaed of NTFS - converted it (boot volume) without issues, and partitioned the drive in two at the same time.

Best would be to backup data and format.

How are you going to run XP on Ubuntu running on a PS3? It's not possible as the PS3 uses a Cell based CPU which has zip in common with x86 architecture. Neither a VM or WINE will work.

You don't need a third party prog to do this. Just use the built-in command line utility 'convert'.

(Note - This is for fat32->ntfs, not the other way around)
