Upgrading to Windows 7

Its Windows, you anyway re-install every 3 months. So whats the deal???

But anyway, cannot wait. Looking forward to Windows7 - time to look at a new PC too :)

Windows 7 FTW!

Still on the RC (7100) and can't wait to use the RTM (7600)

Yeah i always reinstall anf format regulary (or make resore images)

Can you upgrade from any version of Vista, or not?

According to the upgrade paths document that was linked to from the original article:

  • Upgrading from Vista Starter isn't supported.
  • Vista Home Basic users can upgrade to Windows 7 Home Basic, Home Premium or Ultimate.
  • Windows Home Premium users can upgrade to Windows 7 Home Premium or Ultimate.
  • Vista Business users can upgrade to Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise or Ultimate.
  • Vista Enterprise users can only upgrade to Windows 7 Enterprise.
  • Vista Ultimate users can only upgrade to Windows 7 Ultimate.

Apparently, only Windows 7 Home Premium, Professional and Ultimate will be available through retail channels, the rest being available through special arrangement with Microsoft - I do stand to be corrected on this though. (EDIT: According to Wikipedia, Home Basic will only be available in "emerging markets", which may include us. Starter will only be preinstalled on machines purchased through manufacturers, and Enterprise will only be available to companies with Software Assurance contracts with Microsoft. Enterprise and Ultimate will actually be identical, the only difference being the licensing.)

Once you have Windows 7, you'll be able to use Anytime Upgrade to upgrade to a "higher version" of 7:

  • Starter and Home Basic users can go to Home Premium, Professional or Ultimate.
  • Home Premium users can go to Professional or Ultimate.
  • Professional users can go to Ultimate.
  • Enterprise and Ultimate users can't use Anytime Upgrade (there wouldn't be any point to it).

Something that I picked up from the doc but wasn't mentioned in the original article: you can't upgrade from a 32-bit version to a 64-bit one, you have to do a clean install.

I don't trust upgrading over an existing copy of Windows. I will by buying 7 when it comes out though.

Agree - I normally do a clean install anyway at least once a year to get rid of the crap. Have only heard good things about W7, but after the Vista disapointment, propably anything will look good.

Played around with it - still not a fan of the "new" windows explorer GUI. Why did MS have to go and mess with something that worked for so many years.

Back to Norton Commander I guess :o

Microsoft already signed-off the RTM. It has leaked to newsgroups and torrents.
That means that all the testing is already over.
On Aug 6, Microsoft will release the official RTM ISO to technet subscribers.

been running rc2 for a few months now and can't wait for it to be released. might actually buy it this time.
a clean install would be a good idea moving from xp to windoze7 and none of this vista crap.

Full RTM is available, you can get it on TPB... Hash checks are good! 7600.16385.090713-1255_x64fre_client_en-us_Retail_Ultimate-GRMCULXFRER_EN_DVD.iso

So I can't upgrade from XP?

If you had read the article then you'd have not asked the question here..... (the answer is NO btw :)

I found that Windows 7 is actually pretty stable compared to Vista- Vista I could barely run for 2 weeks. Windows 7 was running for 65 days before a power out.
