Upgrading to Windows 8.1 - your experience?

I clean installed 8.1 from previous 7, so no upgrade as such.

obviously a fresh install is going to be quicker, but so far, not missing windows 7 at all.

the multi monitor support is so nice.
the new "start button" is pointless.
notebook sleeps and wakes in under a second, magic.
no driver/compatibility issues

I initially thought the upgrade was good, but... in the end I had to do a clean install because vmware player just didn't want to update the tools after I tried most of the fixes on the net.

The player was acting weird just after the update, but I thought it was ok after an uninstall and reinstall. Amazingly now with the fresh install vmplayer could update the tools and netlimiter 3 64x is working again.

The only sad thing is that... fences isn't working and still have that bug of the icons being stuck and not able to move.

What a back, back, forward, punch it was to get the 8.1 iso and do a clean install ;)

Windows 8.1 is way slower on my wife's Acer Aspire 1410. I don't recommend installing and will keep my Lenovo on Windows 8 until I see improvement. Browsers are especially slow - Chrome and Firefox are using between 20 and 70% CPU regularly after the upgrade. Flash is slow to load, etc. Very frustrating.

Upgrade was seamless and smooth although took ages to complete. I did have one issue though. I had to reinstall my language settings for US-Keyboard International and now I have to double tap double quotes to actually put them down. Haven't yet found a solution to this. Apart from this, everything else works perfectly on both my laptop and desktop.

Ok I need help. Do I need to run all my updates before I "upgrade"? Because I am really having an issue with downloading them. The process is EXTREMELY slow but if I run a speed test I get up to 11mbps so I somehow don't think its the internet connection. Then it stops and says that i need an internet connection. (Really??? grrrr)

If I go to the windows website and click on the Get the free update. It opens Launch Applicator and only gives me an option of using TWINUI which takes me to the App store but not to any specific app then I hit a wall.

Can anybody help me, really begging to pull my hair out......

Thanking u in advance

You have to make sure that Windows 8.0 is completely up to date before attempting the upgrade to Windows 8.1.

You then have to go to the Windows Store on the 'tiled interface,' where you will see this '8.1 upgrade' tile:

Click on it, and follow the instructions as detailed to complete the upgrade to Windows 8.1 - remember that it is about a 3.5 Gb download.....! :(

Rebuilded my notebook yesterday, was completely painless.

Wiped hard drive, and reinstalled Windows 8 from DVD, then just installed one Microsoft update to trigger the Windows 8.1 update in the Store, and it was done.

I reckon it's the closest thing you'll get to a clean install for now.

Very happy with how fast and stable my notebook is running now. Happy days! :)

Ok thanks. Just getting frustrated with the slow downloads of the updates...

I installed Windows 8, and right after that, one 13MB update to trigger the 8.1 update in the store.

Didn't install any other updates for Windows 8 at all.

The only real issue that I had when upgrading from 8 to 8.1, was getting USB 3.0 to work between my phone and my laptop.

I eventually got it working last night, yay!

Was the laptop driver not installed?

My installation caused my laptop to go into recovery mode. Downloaded from MS Store. After Windows 8 was repaired, I couldn't login so I just did a fresh reload:cry:

Mine went smooth. Just had to install the Windows 7 display driver again since its an old laptop which the manufacturer has stopped supporting

I'm getting some real funny behavior lately...

when I Click (left or right, it doesn't really matter) on the start button, then absolutely nothing happens. But when I press the windows button on my keyboard then it does what it is supposed to.

Anyone else experience this?
