Upgrading Vista Ultimate to Windows 7

Hi guys just want to know if anyone has had any sucess with this want to upgrade my Vista Ultimate to Windows 7 on a laptop without a reinstall? Will it cause problems?
 
You're better off selling the laptop and replacing it with a Win7 one.
 
I don't see any upgrade software on the market and that would be an OEM version, so check with the manufacturer. There were also offers for free upgrades to win7 on pro and ultimate if you bought your laptop at a certain date, and if you got some certificate with it to state as much.
 
Could be the pamphlet I have says there is an upgrade package. Who would I contact though to find that out Mircosoft themselves?

Nope, go through the notebook manufacturer. OEM means they support, not MS.

Yes you can, however nobody can guarantee that it won't give you problems as any quirks that's non-vista related will likely pass on during the upgrade!

Also, the upgrade takes VERY long compared to a fresh install!, and you may have driver related issues (although most vista drivers should work with Win7!)

I'd rather back up the data, format, and do a clean install - it's well worth the hassle!

I agree - clean install!!!!
 
A clean install is certainly the preferred option. But an upgrade works. I have done it thrice on laptops. Only on the Lenovo did we encounter a soundcard issue, but it was cured by a driver re-install.
 
What laptop is it?
If they are jacked then I would imagine the upgraded OS would take over the hidden recovery partition on the HD.
Also check you might need to backup the original OS to DVD. I'm sure you'd get instructions how to do it if you order the win7 upgrade through the manufacturer and they'd have the best solution on how to do it there.
 
I upgraded my Vista to Win7 Ultimate over the weekend, on my Compaq 615 and 610 laptops. All went ok, but started getting random errors, even after uninstalling and reinstalling the correct/updated drivers. Upgrade installation took forever!

I've decided to do a clean install on both and see what happens.
