As of today I qualify for an upgrade on my contract. Can someone explain how I need do go about doing this? Is there a way I can do it online or via the phone, or am I forced to go into a MTN shop (200 km away!)?

Phone MTN direct and ask them to email or fax you a list of their offers. The number is 083 123 DOOR. They deliver for free.
When I ported my wife's number over to MTN I used them. I didn't pay for the sim, connection, port or delivery. Was very impressed with their service.

MTN direct is strictly for new contracts, not for upgrades- although the seervice the retentions department provides is much the same.
