My fiance's dad wants to upgrade to a contract that gets him an i phone 4 but his contract only ends in september. Now the ppl in vodashop are saying you can only cancel and go on prepaid for a minimum of six months before taking on another contract. He doesn't want 2 contracts and wants to keep his number. Is this correct?

The stupid thing is that he would be able to cancel his contract now and port to mtn and take out a contract that gets him an iphone straight away but he would prefer not to. This 6 month prepaid thing makes no sense to me.

He can upgrade now for free. The only payin will be the payin fee for the iPhone on his contract.

They will extend his contract for another 24 months from September/December.

AFAIK you can only upgrade 4 months before the end of a 24 month contract. So the earliest you could upgrade is June 2011.

Unless you on a Talk 500 and or average spend is higher than R800....then you can upgrade a lot earlier.
if his contract costs him more, say R1200. & the allow him to upgrade now (current ends in sept- i think was mentioned above) then his next contract would only really end in Sept 2 years from now, or not? Coz surely they wont bin that other 6months..

Correct missy. :-)

Well he is currently on a weekender what would he have to pay in to take an iphone 4 now and say change to a business contract or whatever.

If he does not meet the premature upgrade requirements the the system will not allow him to upgrade.

For weekenders, you are allowed to upgrade 2 months before the end of your contract date, SMS UG to 35050 I think it is and it will give you the date you can upgrade.
Trying to do it before then, it won't happen, the system won't allow it... I've tried for my other contract... but they allow this on the more expensive contracts though.

I still dont understand why he was told if he cancels this contract he would have to stay on prepaid for 6 months befor being able to take on another contract on the same number.

Out of interest what would the pay in be monthly on a 4u contract for the phone?

You are not allowed equipment on the 4U contract. There is no montly subscription fee and therefore no equipment gets issued. You will have to buy the phone cash.

they would have made him ''buy out'' of the contract. = the money he would have paid them for that time & probably a penalty.

eg. if his payments were R200/m then he would have had to pay them R1200 & a penalty. so yeah they won't mind him cancelling but his pocket would have.

VSP do not charge a penalty on top of your contract buy out. They simply want the money that would have bee received should the contract have continued (subscriptions). Below is a example of the VSP cancellation quote.

You can see that things such a clip and bundles are also charged for. You may request to have these cancelled....then once they are removed from your line, and the quote redone, they will no longer be included in your cancellation cost.

Thanks for hurting my eyes with the Windows XP olive green theme.

Great tip...can save you a few bucks.

Not always true.

I tried to cancel my business talk 180 package, with three months on it, they wanted in the region of R2k.

I just let the number idle for the last three months and went to another Vodaworld outlet and got a new one.
