I am looking for an uninterrupted power supply(UPS) for my PC and ADSL router but I am pretty clueless regarding UPSs as I have never used one.

Does anyone have any experience of using UPSs with their ADSL connection.
I have 3 scenarios that I am considering using the UPS for.
1) 1 PC + 1 ADSL router
1) 2 PCs + 1 ADSL router
2) 2 PCs + 1 ADSL router + 1 switch

The power supply must not be one that has to be fixed when a fuse blows, gets a power surge etc. After it's installed it must never complain.

Well, all I know is look for ones with 3pin plugs, that dont use these PSU to monitor type male/female cable, but that uses normal plugs, that is cause routers and switches normally have normal plugs.

I have 2 computers (800Mhz pentium media server + AMD Barton, 3 HDD in total, both standard desktops) and one 15 inch LCD on a 600VA generic UPS. If both comps are running when power goes out the UPS complains heavily and will shut down within 2 minutes. So basically my UPS is only usefull to give you time to save your work and shutdown before complete powerloss. All I actually need.

OH, I modified one of those screen power connectors to have a regular 3 prong power adaptor on the end, that way I can plug anything into it.

Well, a 600VA UPS will be fine for 1 pc + adsl router + switch. If you're going to be running 2 pc's rather look for a 1kVA. With regards to the plugs - you can put a normal male kettle connector on a mutliplug adapter (3-way or should be fine, depending on your needs). That will plug into your ups and give you some normal 3 point plugs.

For pure leeching the end of the month, it would be best to have just the router on the UPS. Make sure the router makes the connection (not a PPPoE bridge connection from the PC).

That way, if the power goes for an hour or so, your connection remains alive, and does not get resest.

AFAIK it is cheaper to buy two 600VA UPSs than one 1000VA UPS. I last paid about R300 for a Mecer 600VA ups

If I use a UPS will its power last longer (after a power failure) if I remove the screen power from the PC and put it ouside the UPS with its own power cord instead of the screen using the PC's power supply?

Also how long will a 600VA last me for a 1pc and router setup compared to a 1000VA?

provided the screen is on, yes - the screen will use UPS power. The problem, is how do you want to use the UPS? If you want to save your work, you will need the screen.

I'm guessing here, but I think at the most you'll get about 15-20 minutes with a standard desktop computer and no screen on a 600VA.

I just bought 2 of these:

Code:
UPS002 UPS 1000VA(OEM) W/LCD 79 R 480.00

From http://www.frontier-electronics.co.za

They do the job. It comes with a monitoring cable & software (which is rather crap - it only shows 'live' data, doesn't keep any history).

They also have an LCD screen front panel which shows current status and load. You need to get right in front of the thing to read the display tho. Glows bright blue when you press the button, so you can read it in the dark.

My SLI rig w/ 19" CRT causes 60% load on the UPS, while my other machine (6800) w/ 17" CRT only causes 20% load.

It has 4 outputs, but helpfully they only supply 1 pigtail. It also has RJ45 inputs for telephone / LAN surge protection.
