I'm looking to buy a UPS, but the one feature I want on it is this.

When it goes onto the UPS or is about to run outta power, then the PC must switch off (properly)

Is this possible on UPS's?

I read somewhere that it can be done but I'm not sure which model UPS might have this 'feature' :D

Help please.

Itc called Line Interactive UPS.
You need a serial port on your PC.

They come standard on most UPS now really.
Comes with Winstar \Pro software, and runs in conjunction with the UPS service.
So XP/Vista/Server needed/

Have had an APC UPS with USB interface for more than a year and works very well. Can program the unit on time delay, warnings, running programs etc with software interface. It also wasn't much more expensive than the non interface ones or those with serial ports.

Is it me or are UPS's suddenly Fscking expensive?!?!!??!?!!!?

The price on APC's has gone up due to exchange rate. Stock is also difficult to obtain.

BTW in answer to your original question, some PC bios's have an option to remain powered off on restoration of power, thus requiring manual switch on.

Erm Line Interactive refers to the topology not the fact that it uses a serial cable ;)

But yeah almost every UPS sold by APC feature either USB or serial interface. Probably many other brands feature it also.

Anyway you can tell Windows to shutdown when the battery reaches a certain level using power management, just like with laptops (if you've used one before :D )
