Hey MyBBers!

I am a console gamer - I know, don't hate you pc fan boys... But I have decided to build up a little gaming machine. Nothing too crazy. I need advice if I should buy something today or not:

I have been offered 16Gb 1600 Corsair Vengeance DDR3 RAM (4x4Gb)
and 2 x ATI HD 4870 1Gb GDDR5 cards

all for R2100

Is this worth it?!?!

Thanks in advance,

Scrumpy

let me guess. it's only available for today and if you don't act now you'll lose the deal?

The graphics cards are R255 each. So R510. Thats brand new.
The Corsair Vengeance is R259 brand new for a 4gb module which is R1036, brand new

prophecy.co.za for the prices

Someone is going to make R600 off of this "deal"

Not for today only... But had said I'd meet today. Thanks for this. Will check out prophecy now - How best to spend R2-2.5k ?

And RAM is R1493 - so I think you should keep quiet if you don't know what you're talking about - bad advice

I can't really commend on the GPU, but I've only had bad experiences from buying memory that is clocked faster than the industry norm. I've had numerous machines at the office fail. From now on I only buy the industry standard speeds. DDR 1333 :D

Actually...

R255 for the graphics? Theres an HD 4890 1Gb for R2667...

And RAM is R1493 - so I think you should keep quiet if you don't know what you're talking about - bad advice

Dude he's giving you valid advice.

4890 is 3 generations old! It's not worth anywhere near R2667 and no one in their right mind would buy them new for that.
And Corsair Vengeance 8GB 1600 DDR3 @ R451 = R902 ...

You may now apologise.

EDIT: you should rather look at getting 8GB RAM for now and use the 2k buy to buy a decent current gen card like the 7850. Do you even have a PSU capable of running 2 x 4870 in crossfire. Those consumed a decent amount of power and required 2 x PCIe 6 pin each IIRC.

wtf, I searched the products you described on their site and gave you the pricing. how was I supposed to know this is not the "exact" product you are looking to buy you ****ing *******?

Next time shut the **** up and go someplace else if you don't want URGENT advice

Ok, that might be the case for that model, but the site he provided is prophecy:

The exact RAM:

Thanks for the advice Peanut, will look into that RAM and some other Gcard, but I will not apologise as AcidRazor gave bad advice - R255 for the cards?

you apologise now son, now demmit

No look you won't find that card new any more. It is just not made any more.
His prices were obviously 2nd hand and relative to you as you buying it second hand. I'd say it's a bit of a low estimate by him on their current worth. I can't remember what the last 2nd hand price I saw those sell for but not more than R500 each.

EDIT: and that RAM you linked is slighly better than the ones I linked, in that they have a lower CL, but you would never notice this beside doing benching. That said, you should try go for 1600Mhz CL9 as a nice balance between cost/perfromance

Price wise, its worth it compared to how much you would pay retail,

But I would rather spend +-2500 on a newer gen GFX card and get way more performance out of it.
(I recently got a 7850 2GB and am very happy with it)

(You can get a good visual performance and value for money here)

RAM is cheap, and do you really need 16GB? ...

My three cents :)

That is the actual value of those cards, trust us. You will definately not need 16GB of RAM, even 4GB would be just fine to start with. Use the rest to get a current generation card like a Geforce GTX 650 or 660 or a Radeon 7770 or 7850, as per the advice above.

Even the lower of those cards will create graphics so much better than console that you will weep.

In summary: the person who offered you that deal is trying to rip you off

Thanks Peanut - appreciate the info and advice. Good to know some people have manners. Sheesh
