Hi All,

So i have got the most bizarre thing happening at work and cannot for the life of me figure it out. It need to URGENTLY be fixed, as in yesterday. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!

Problem
We have a server at work which all managers and admin staff connect to for databases and backup purposes. The way that i set this up was that i would make a mirror type account on the server as to what was on each persons individual PC. For example, my user is carstens and pass is 123
Now on the server itself, i created a user account which is the exact same account credentials (carstens / 123)
I then, on my laptop go to "My Computer" and choose to map a network drive...
I choose a free drive letter, eg: Z:, i then enter the IP address of the server, and try to connect to my shared drive via the carstens / 123

Now this worked perfectly for us/me up until just now... My accountant got a new laptop and we tried to do this process ^^ mentioned above, but it just tells me it cant connect. How did this process work before on 10 different machines, but now suddenly anything i try and connect just wont! I deleted the "accounting" user on the server, re-made it and then tried to connect his existing laptop to that, but NO, it wont connect to it now... Why did this work before and suddenly it is not?

Guys i am DESPERATE for assistance here... Please please pleeeeeeease assist!

All PC's are using Windows 7 and belong to "Workgroup"

What server is it?

Are you running a domain named workgroup?

erm, slow down, take a deep breath, give info.

Either way, if it is a workgroup the username should be entered as servername\username
if it's a workgroup it should be domainname\username

make sure the machines are all in the same ip range as well.

Doesnt sound like he is on a Domain..
Can you still access the "maps" from the other accounts you have set up?

Does it just say cannot connect? Tried a ping test?

Try from command line to see what error it gives:

net use Z: \\SERVER\Folder /USER:carstens
or
net use Z: \\SERVER\Folder /USER:DOMAIN\caarstena <--- depending if you're using a domain

Disclaimer:
This is off the top of my head, dont have a windows machine to test this on, let us know what comes back.

Hi all,

K sorry, i was a little more frantic whilst typing that... I didn't mention that i CAN connect to the server (Just a normal Win7PRO machine) and CAN ping it...When i try connect to the mapped drive, it doesn't seem to accept the credentials. If i select "Connect with different credentials" and enter the username and password (which is the same on his laptop to the user i created on the server) it gives me the cannot connect message, if i leave that box so that it connects with current credentials, i get the same messsage.

What makes me BEF*K is that i have setup the entire rest of the offices PC's like this and it worked, why now suddenly is it not???

EDIT: Will post actual message tomz...

your account locked out?

I think crackersa is prob referring to a Cal's

Check IP & subnet mask...windows boxes do that crap when they don't match to those on the server (not perfectly match obviously).

Also...firewall.

Check on the server that the account/password hasn't expired.
You didn't mention what server it was. Try setting your Windows 7 to not be part of a homegroup. Also set encryption to 56 bit.

Try from one of the other working machines to log on the Accounting username & password?

Also make sure your part of a home or work network and not a public network.

It sounds like your client PC is trying to use the wrong credentials to logon to the share. Probably trying to logon with guest or something. Even though you specified a user / pass. That is, it's not giving the locally logged on user (which matches the server's user, I presume) when you're trying to connect to the share, it's giving some other credentials, which are getting denied. Windows (all versions) does that from time-to-time. Google 'clear cached netbios passwords' or something similar, you should be able to remove whatever it's saved and start over, so to speak. These are the types of weird issues you gonna get if you don't use a domain. Why aren't you using a Domain? (Rhetorical question)

Other things to check:
Your server isn't running a workstation OS right? XP, Vista, 7 etc. Cos then you're gonna have a hardcoded connection limit, hence somebody asking earlier how many PC's you have on the network, which you didn't answer.

Go through the local policies on the new PC - paying particular attention to the ones involving network access. Most of them should be disabled / not-applied by default, but sometimes you need to enable one or two of them, bearing in mind that you then have to set the correct value - "yes" or "no" etc.

good luck.

OH, and put a plan in place to setup a proper Domain.

It's Windows 7 all the way through...

All PC's are on the same IP range, subnet etc... As mentioned, i can see and connect to the server, it just wont accept my logon credentials

All machines are set to "Workgroup". When i say server, i just mean a PC running various databases that other PC's connect to. It's just a normal Windows 7PRO x86 PC. We are a small company, so making do with what i can for now...

Well tbh, i am not sure how to setup a domain as i have never done it before. My IT knowledge is better than basic, but far from calling myself an IT guru...

The problem is definitely to do with Logon credentials as none of the username/password combos seem to want to authenticate.

As for the Password expiring, that is definitely not the case.

PS: Thanks to everyone for coming to the party here and assisting! I'm sure that with all your help i can come to a solution soon.. Well i bloody hope so :erm:

JUST ANOTHER DESCRIPTION OF THE ISSUE:

Basically it goes like this:
- when i say "Server" i mean a Windows 7 PRO x86 PC running Databases that other PC's on the network connect to. (We are a small company so making do with that for now)
- The problem is that i can connect to the server and ping it etc... The problem is once i add the mapped drive, it needs credentials to login with, and when i enter those credentials, i get a failed connection message pop up instead of the shared folders. The credentials that i have entered are definitely the correct ones
- The old accounting PC was connected fine, then the guy got a new laptop, so i tried to map him a network drive, but the following issue ^ occured. After a while we decided to delete the accounting account, re-add it and try map again. Now i cant get his OLD Laptop to connect (Which used to), or his new one So currently our accountant cant use Pastel or VIP, which is a big problem as im sure you can imagine...

Windows 7 only allows 20 concurrent connections - That was my first thought is that giving you hassles since the server is running Windows 7.

Please PM me your details; so I can assist you remotely resolving the issue. If you want?

There is only 9 users registered for this mapped drive...
But that does not mean there are less than 9 concurrent connections. From what you have said, there are databases that people connect to which could be considered concurrent, that would include Printers, internet connections accessing databases. Just throwing it out there as I have had the same type of issue with Users at a remote site with accessing a Windows 7 Server.
