Hi guys,

I am looking for a Huawei E173 3G modem to use with 8ta. Trouble is that no one seems to have stock! And the E367 will not work with my router.

So if I purchase one of the modems from vodacom or cellc (which they say is network locked), is there any easy way to get it working with 8ta?

I can't say with any authority, but none of the 3G modems myself or my hubby have ever used have been network locked. As I understand it is illegal to network lock anything in SA. This is why cellphones are not network locked any more. You should be able to open any 3G modem and pop in whatever data SIM you want to use.

Hopefully someone more technically authoritative can validate this or refute it.

I want to believe that and I enquired exactly the same. I was told however that the modem is Vodafone branded and will not work with any other network. He therefore refused to sell it to me.

Reflash with the generic firmware from the manufacturer websites. Only the software is network locked for branded sticks

That is what I assumed... Any modem with 8ta software installed. Are you certain about this? Because I will just go pick up a cell c or vodacom modem now! :D

Vodafone software is a bitch. It won't dial other ISP. It is the only restriction, no locking. Just don't use it... Other branded dashboards have no such restriction. For 3G router it doesn't matter at all.

Thanks. Will the cell c modem work? Yeah I'm going to plug it into a router.

It heavily depends on your router. Read modem compatibility chart, it changes with updated firmware, new devices are added. CellC modem has its model number (Huawei or ZTE), four models so far.

Thanks I am aware of the router compatibility - just worried that if I purchase a cell c branded modem it will not work with my 8ta sim card.

It is definitely illegal for networks to lock devices to their SIM cards.

I've used an 8ta 10GB SIM in a Vodafone/com branded Huawei Wi-Fi hotspot without a problem.

The branded dialers are mostly junk, but if you're just going to connect it to a router (and you've checked compatibility) you shouldn't have a problem.

Thanks fnfal! I ordered one through mitabyte and they will ship to GP for free in 2 days :)
