Kung flu is funny. It actually makes lite of the virus. When you can't laugh anymore and get too serious is when the real trouble will start.

Don't get me wrong - I do find the "Kung flu" funny but you're missing the context of why a white house staffer said that - because leadership at the top is shifting the narrative of blame to the Chinese. The fact that it got this bad in the US is because of the under-preparation and key actions Trump took that exacerbated the problems we are seeing unravel. But elections are in November and Trump needs a scapegoat, it doesn't matter if the ramifications are increased racism.

Anyone who says it doesn't incite racism isn't here and isn't the group experiencing it.

Both of these things can be true. The Chinese are to blame for the outbreak being this bad globally, and Trump's administration was inadequately prepared to handle anything like this.

I remembered it as the Chinese ambassador/official complaining? But it was days ago and I probably just misread the headline. I have no idea who Weijia Jiang is, so then it is even less significant than what I thought.

And still yes, probably lying.

I'm open to this bolded idea. But can you expand on it? How is it the Chinese's fault for the outbreak, I can say their toleration of wet markets helps spread zootropic diseases but curious on your take on this.

It still doesn't mean what Trump is trying to do is right. We can call AIDs the African virus - do you think Africans will be offended, and perhaps, targeted? (obviously very different diseases in terms of transmissions and vector).

It's called COVID19 and is a type of novel coronavirus. Attempts to change the naming is political in nature and has ramifications for people.

It is a play on words. As in kung fu. I thought it was really obvious. Is it now racist to associate Kung fu with China. I thought they would be rather prood of it.

China as in the Chinese government, heavily censored people reporting it.

I mean you didn't even know the origin of the term kung flu, or who it was said to, or the person who reported it. But it has to be a lie. :rolleyes:

100% agreed that their censorship also played a role in the early spread. I'm no fan of the Chinese government.

But should we rename names of diseases to shift blame? If so, what's the purpose and ramification?
