Where (and why) do you guys find time to get so deep into US politics? It's not like they're on the other side of the world and, aside from broad economic policies, have very little effect on our lives down here on the tip of Africa.

Only because we live here. If I were in the US I'd probably also find their politics depressing, but from here it is indeed a crazy circus.

Read this by the Arch-Keysian Himself,the ever knowing Paul Krugman, written in 2002. He wanted a housing bubble.

The basic point is that the recession of 2001 wasn't a typical postwar slump, brought on when an inflation-fighting Fed raises interest rates and easily ended by a snapback in housing and consumer spending when the Fed brings rates back down again. This was a prewar-style recession, a morning after brought on by irrational exuberance. To fight this recession the Fed needs more than a snapback; it needs soaring household spending to offset moribund business investment. And to do that, as Paul McCulley of Pimco put it, Alan Greenspan needs to create a housing bubble to replace the Nasdaq bubble.

Judging by Mr. Greenspan's remarkably cheerful recent testimony, he still thinks he can pull that off. But the Fed chairman's crystal ball has been cloudy lately; remember how he urged Congress to cut taxes to head off the risk of excessive budget surpluses? And a sober look at recent data is not encouraging.

So what did the government do? They created a housing bubble by subsidising the risk of people who shouldn't qualify for mortgages, and we all know how that ended.

Trump has been a force for good for the economy because he is getting the people who literally have no-idea what they are doing (i.e the government) out of the economy. That is more significant than anything Obama did.

Bwahahaha all Obama done was put the money printing press into 6th gear and watch the stock markets benefit (NOT the real economy). Not a very good thing to do (in the long run) but useful to make his presidency look good. The Fed under Trump has continued that process but problem is they can't stop now. Whether it's the Repo market or elsewhere money printing and low rates HAVE TO BE MAINTAINED or it all comes crashing down.

All that Obama's policy achieved is the guarantee that the bubbles were blown bigger than they ever have been before, with banks back to their predatory lending tactics and high risk moves, knowing that whatever happens they will be bailed out by government.

Those banks that were going under should've been allowed to fail in 2008, it's how the market get's rid of dead wood, now all you have are a bunch of zombie banks that are addicted to free money. Too big to fail and too big to jail means they shouldn't exist AT ALL.
